국문 초록

오늘날 한국의 고등교육에서 학령기 인구의 감소와 성인학습자층의 부상은 고등교육기관들에 새로운 도전과제들을 던져주고 있다. 변화하는 교육 환경에서 대학들은 새로운 고객집단인 성인학습자의 교육요구에 관심을 갖고 대응방안을 모색하고 있으며, 국가적 차원에서도 고등교육 수준의 평생교육을 활성화하기 위해 다양한 정책적 노력을 기울이고 있다. 이러한 배경에서 성인학습자들의 고등교육 참여가 확대될 것으로 예상됨에 따라 대학교육의 현장에도 성인학습자의 특성을 고려한 체계적인 학습자 지원 방안이 요구되고 있다. 이 연구는 성인학습자들을 위한 학습자 지원 체제를 발전시켜온 미국 펜실바니아 주립대학교의 사례를 통해 대학의 성인학습자 지원체제의 특성을 살펴보고 한국의 대학 성인교육 현장에 주는 시사점들을 탐색하고자 한 것이다. 이 연구에서는 대학의 성인학습자 지원체제에 대한 심층적이고 포괄적인 이해를 위하여 사례연구방법을 적용하였다. 연구 결과, '대학의 성인학습자 지원 체제'는 학습자의 학업 전개의 흐름에 따라 다양한 종류의 지원 서비스들이 통합적으로 제공되는 하나의 유기체적인 활동체계로 개념화할 수 있다. 본 연구사례는 한국의 대학교육 현장에서 성인학습자 지원 체제 구축과 관련해 학습자 중심의 통합적인 접근과 이를 뒷받침할 지속적인 혁신 기제가 필요함을 시사하고 있다.

영문 초록

In resent years the decrease of the number of potential students is the one of the greatest challenges that higher education institutions in Korea have faced. While adult learners' needs of lifelong learning keep increasing, higher educational institutions need to improve the educational environments for adult learners in the perspective of lifelong education. For adult learners, usually many different difficulties and barriers restrict their participation in higher education. Therefore, it is important for higher education institutions to increase institutional flexibility and to provide systematic support services based on the understanding adult learners' characteristics, educational needs, and their barriers to education. In this context, this study examines the adult learner support initiatives of the Pennsylvania State University in the U.S., as a case of the systematic and process encompassing approaches to educational support for adult students in higher education and the study presents some policy implications for the design of adult learner support service functions for higher education in Korea. The Case of this study also provide insight and holistic outlook on designing and implementing support services for adult learners in higher education. This study concludes with some policy implications for adult education of Korean Universities, in terms of learner-centered approached initiatives and internal and external partnerships.
