영문 초록

This study aimed to determine how peer cooperative physical activities affected young children's social competence development. The subjects of this research were 40 children of 5 years who attended two different public kindergartens. The experimental group and control group consisted of 20 children respectively and a 8-week program focusing on peer cooperative physical activities was implemented with the control group. The Social Competence Scale translated and revised by Yang, Lee and Lee (1987) on the basis of the Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scales developed by Sparrow, Balla, and Cicchetti (1985) was used to measure children's social competence. Data was analyzed using t-test and ANCOVA. The results showed that statistically significant differences between pretest and post-test of young children's social competence scores, including social activeness, cooperativeness, social participation and autonomy, adaptability based on social norms, and leadership, were revealed only in the experimental group. Also, social competence scores after the peer cooperative physical activities program were significantly different between the experimental and control groups even after the pretests were controlled. Therefore, peer cooperative physical activities were found to positively affect young children's social competence.
