국문 초록

동아시아 사회는 다양한 성선호를 보이고 있다. 강한 아들선호부터 무성선호 및 약한 딸선호에 이르기까지 동아시아 사회의 자녀 성선호는 다양성이 특징이다. 이 연구는 2006년에 한국, 일본, 중국, 대만에서 시행한 동아시아사회조사 자료 및 2010년 태국과 베트남에서 시행한 가족조사 자료를 이용하여 2000년대 후반, 동북아시아와 동남아시아에 걸친 동아시아 6개 사회에서 자녀 성선호가 어떤 모습으로 존재하고 있고, 한 사회 내에서 자녀 성선호는 어떤 차별성을 보이고 있는지 분석하고 있다. 동아시아 6개 사회의 자녀 성선호를 분석한 결과 다음과 같은 사실이 밝혀졌다. 첫째, 자녀 성선호는 동아시아 6개 사회에서 다양한 모습으로 존재한다. 하노이를 중심으로 한 북부 베트남의 자녀 성선호는 분석 대상 사회 중 가장 강한 아들선호를 보여주고, 한국이 뒤를 잇고 있다. 그러나 일본과 태국은 동아시아 6개 사회에서 딸선호가 가장 강하다. 대만은 자녀 무성선호 사회로 변화하고 있다. 둘째, 자녀 성선호는 한 사회 내에서 성별로도 차이가 크다. 동아시아 6개 사회에서 남자는 여자에 비해 딸보다 아들을 더 선호한다. 심지어 남자는 여자에 비해 딸보다 자녀 무성선호를 택할 확률이 더 높다. 셋째, 동아시아 사회에서 나이가 든 층일수록 딸을 선호하는 경향이 낮아진다. 특히 한국은 60대 이상의 고령층에서 아들선호가 뚜렷하다. 넷째, 대부분의 분석 대상 국가에서 학력수준이 높아질수록 아들선호가 약화되고, 여아선호가 높아지는 경향이 보인다. 그러나 동일한 경향으로 일반화하기는 어렵다. 다섯째, 동아시아 사회에서 아들을 선호하는 사람은 딸을 선호하는 사람에 비해서 더 권위적이고, 남자 중심적인 가족가치를 지닌다. 그러나 집단적인 가족가치의 측면에서는 일본에서만 남자가 여자보다 아들을 선호하는 경우 더 집단적인 가족가치를 드러낸다.

영문 초록

Gender preference for children in East Asian societies can be characterized as a diversity of preferences. Although son preference was strong and prevalent across traditional and agrarian societies, especially in Asian societies, it is also true that diverse gender preference for children has existed in East Asian settings. Employing East Asian Social Survey 2010 data for China, Japan, Korea and Taiwan, and data from Thailand Family Survey 2010 and Vietnam Family Survey 2010, this research aims at investigating the following three subjects: Firstly, this research investigates the diversity of gender preference for children in East Asian societies. Secondly, gender, age, and educational differentials in gender preference within a society are examined in six East Asian societies. Thirdly, the significance of gender preference, especially son preference on family values is explored in this research. Our major findings are as follows. Firstly, six East Asian societies show the diversity of gender preference for children. Vietnam, especially Northern Vietnamese society is still a very strong son preference society. Korea is ranked as the second in son preference after Vietnam. Secondly, males are likely to prefer a son to a daughter in all six East Asian societies. This is true regardless of characters of gender preference in each East Asian country. Thirdly, age differentials in gender preference are not consistent across all six East Asian societies. In Korea, however, it is very clear that old generation still values son over daughter while youngsters are likely to prefer daughter to son. This dramatic age differential in son and daughter preference makes it possible for Korea to be a country of both son and daughter preference at the same time. Fourthly, highly educated people are more likely to be far away from traditional gender preference than lowly educated people. This tendency is more clearer in China than any other East Asian societies. Lastly, those of son preference are more likely to have authoritarian and hierarchical, and male-centric family values than those of daughter preference. However, son preference is not strongly related to collectivistic family values in East Asian societies. Only Japanese people who prefer son to daughter are more likely to be collectivistic than those of daughter preference.
