국문 초록

현재 가톨릭교회는 제2차 바티칸 공의회 개막 50주년을 기념하고 있는데, 이 공의회는 16개의 공식 문헌을 통해 신학적이고 사목적인 면에서 새로운 방향을 제시하고 있다. 본 논문은 이 위대한 사건의 전환점들에 대해 살펴본다. 칼 라너의 말을 인용하자면, 전 세계 약 3,000명의 주교들이 참여했던 이 공의회는 그 자체가 세계교회로서의 교회의 첫 번째 자기실현이었다. 더구나, 공의회는 자신을 가리켜 ‘사목적 공의회’라고 규정하였고, ‘사목성’의 원리를 따라 현대 세계의 맥락에서 그리스도교 신앙의 해석에 착수하였다. 이 사목성은 공의회 문헌들의 형식적 구성에서 나타나는데, 교회 내부를 향한 문헌들은 하느님 백성으로서의 교회의 모든 구성원들의 참여를 강조하고 있고, 교회 외부를 향한 문서들은 문화적, 종교적 다름을 인정하고 있다. 한편 공의회 문헌들의 내용에 있어서 이 ‘사목성’은 물질적 가난과 종교자유의 문제들과 같은 현대의 중요한 도전들에 대한 교회의 응답을 다루는 점에서 드러나고 있다.

영문 초록

The Catholic Church celebrates the 50th Anniversary of the inauguration of the Second Vatican Council, which in its 16 documents has given a new theological and pastoral orientation. This article seeks to expound some turning points of this great event. In the words of Karl Rahner, the Council of about 3,000 bishops from around the world was in itself the first self-realization of the Church as the Universal Church. Furthermore, the Council defined itself as a “pastoral council”. According to the principle of pastorality, it undertook an interpretation of the Christian faith in the context of modernity. This Pastorality shows up in the formal composition of the documents ad intra which emphasize the participation of all the members of the people of God, and of the documents ad extra which recognize the cultural and religious otherness. As far as the content is concerned, the Council does take up the important contemporary challenges such as the questions of material poverty and religious freedom and the respective responses of the Church.
