유표성 이론을 통한 인지주의와 비인지주의 재해석

국문 초록

심리학과 철학의 경계 위에 있다고 말할 수 있는 감정의 특질을 구명하기 위해 오늘날 영미권 연구자들은 ‘인지주의’와 ‘비인지주의’라는 틀을 사용하고 있다. 이 틀은 감정 자체의 속성들을 이해하는 데 매우 유용함에도 불구하고 그 구도가 보여주는, 양립하기 어려워 보이는 대립으로 인해 여전히 감정을 온전하게 포착하는 데에 어려움을 주고 있다. 이를 위해 나는 언어학 및 기호학 이론 가운데 하나인 유표성이론(Markedness Theory)을 빌어 감정과 관련한 ‘인지-비인지주의’ 구도의 위계나 위상(topology)을 명료하게 조율해보고자 한다. 유표성 이론의 적용을 뒷받침하고자 감정과 관련한 주자철학의 개념어들, 특히 待對的 雙關語인 性ㆍ 情을 중심으로 人心ㆍ道心, 中節 및 感應 등을 검토함으로써 감정 이해의 틀을 다시금 성찰할 수 있는 계기를 마련할 생각이다. 이 과정에서 나는 인지주의와 비인지주의 진영이 실은 상호 배타적일 수 없으며 본질적으로는 감정 이해의 축을 어디에 설정하느냐에 따라 그 무게 중심이 비대칭적으로 달라질 수밖에 없는 상관적 관계임을 보여주고자 한다.

영문 초록

These days, contemporary researchers in English speaking world use the frame of cognitivism and non-cognitivism in order to examine the nature of emotions, which would be a common topic in both psychology and philosophy. In spite of the fact that the frame is very effective to figure out many interesting features of emotions per se, it is still hard to fully grasp the entire picture of emotions because of certain conflicts between the axes of the frame, which seem incompatible with one another. By leaning on markedness theory, which is one of the interesting theories in linguistics, I will clearly show you rearrangement of the orders between the axes of the frame, or a different type of topology between them in understanding the nature of emotions. For a backup of markedness theory in terms of applying to philosophy of emotion, I shall explore such correlative concepts of Zhu Xi’s philosophy as nature-emotion(xing-qing), human mind-moral mind(renxin-daoxin) and the receptive-responsive resonance(gan-ying). In this vein, I will prove that cognitivism and non-cognitivism are not exclusive of one another. Depending on how to set up the criteria of analyzing emotions, in conclusion, the two axes of the frame are asymmetrically correlative with each other.
