초등학교 개정 교과서의 다문화적 내용 분석

국문 초록

이 논문은 초등학교 개정 교과서에서 다문화 관련 내용을 분석하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 교육부는 2006년 12월 다문화 관련 교과 교육과정 시안 연구 개발을 발표한데 이어 2007년 개정 교육과정에 순혈주의와 단일민족주의 관련 내용을 대폭 삭제하고 다문화 관련 내용을 삽입하기로 결정한 바 있다. 이에 따라 2009년에는 1ㆍ2학년 교과서가, 2010년에는 3ㆍ4학년 교과서가 출간되었다. 따라서 개정 교육과정에서 언급된 관점이 개정 교과서에서 얼마나 반영되었는지 살펴보는 일은 매우 시급하고 중요한 일이라 판단된다. 이 논문은 <초ㆍ중등 교육과정 및 교과서의 다문화적 요소분석을 통한 개정 방안 연구>를 비롯한 몇 가지 중요 선행 연구를 비판적으로 살펴보면서, 선행 연구가 제시한 다문화 요소의 분석틀 (정체성, 다양성 사회정의)을 그대로 활용했다. 다만 선행연구가 주로 교육과정과 기존의 교과서 분석에 주안점을 맞추었다면, 이 연구는 올해 출간되어 아직 한 번도 분석되지 않은 개정판 교과서를 대상으로 하고 있다는 점에서 의미가 있다. 분석 대상 교과서는 개정판 초동학교 3ㆍ4학년 1ㆍ2학기 교과서, 특히 다문화적 내용이 많이 등장하는 사회, 도덕, 국어 교과서 및 4학년 1ㆍ2학기 사회과 탐구 둥 총 8종이다. 주요 분석 결과로는 첫째, 사회교과서의 경우 다문화적 내용의 빈도수가 가장 많이 나타나고 있으나 여전히 주로 지식ㆍ이해의 범주에 머물러 있어서 가치ㆍ태도의 교육 내용이 보완이 필요해 보인다. 둘째, 도덕교과서의 경우 정체성의 영역이 상대적으로 많이 등장하고 있으며 특히 3학년 2학기 교과서에 다문화적 내용이 단원 수준으로 제시된 점이 특징적이다. 셋째, 국어교과서의 경우 사회정의 부분이 많이 보완된 점이 돋보인다. 넷째, 사회과 탐구(경기도의 생활)의 경우 소수자들의 겪는 어려움들을 지식ㆍ이해의 차원뿐만 아니라 가치ㆍ태도의 측면에서 적절하게 제시하고 있다. 그러나 다문화 관련 용어 사용에 있어서의 모호함이나 이주노동자에 대한 편협한 관점들이 남아있어 다소 미홉한 점도 있다. 이 논문은 개정 교과서의 다문화 요소 분석의 출발점에 불과하다. 왜냐하면 본 연구 결과는 초등학교 3ㆍ4학년 교과서만을 대상으로 하고 있기 때문에 일반화되기 어려운 한계가 있기 때문이다. 2011 년에 5ㆍ6학년 교과서가 출간되면 이 연구는 초등학교 전 학년 개정 교과서의 다문화적 요소 분석이라는 전체적인 차원에서 보완될 필요가 있다.

영문 초록

The objective of this article is to analyze multicultural contents in revised textbooks for elementary school. Since announcing the development of multicultural education curriculum in December 2006, the Ministry of Education has decided to make a major overhaul by both eliminating most of the unilateral ethnicity contents and inserting a great deal of multicultural contents in 2007 revised national curriculum. The textbooks for grades 1-2 and grades 3-4 went through publication in 2009 and 2010, respectively. As a result, it is pertinent to scrutinize how much of the proposed curriculum and perspectives have been applied to the revised textbooks. This article critically examines several preceding studies on elementary curriculum and existing textbooks, and utilizes the framework for analysis of multicultural contents (identity, diversity, social justice). However, this study pioneers the analysis on newly published textbooks. The eight textbooks examined in this study include revised textbooks for the first and second semesters of grades 3-4, especially subjects in Social Science, Ethics, and Korean Language where the reference to multiculturalism is the most prevalent. The results of the analysis are as follows: First, in case of Social Science, despite the high frequency of multicultural references, the contents are limited to a superficial level of knowledge and understanding. Thus it needs to be enhanced by emphasizing more involvement in attitude and value. Secondly, it is noteworthy that the Ethics textbooks treat multicultural education extensively in a chapter/unit, especially in the second semester of third grade. Third, in the Korean Language textbooks the contents regarding social justice have been significantly enhanced. Finally, the Social Science Research textbook (Life in Kyonggi Province) are quite successful in treating the issues in regards to the small number of multiculturally affected individuals in depth. However, the equivocal use of several terms and prejudices on immigrant workers need to be amended. Since the subject of the analysis is limited to the textbooks for third and fourth grades, it may not be appropriate to draw a general conclusion on the issue solely based on this study. While the study provides a ground for initial analysis, it needs to be expanded to comprehensively include the analysis of multicultural contents in revised elementary textbooks in its entirety.
