The Restoration Comedy, or the Comedy of Manners depicts the depravity and the pleasure-seeking spirit of life that characterized the most dissolute portion of fashionable society. It reveals the deception, hypocrisy, indifference and cruelty that abound in the intrigues of such a world. This article focuses on the hypocritical society and marriage in William Congreve's The Way of the World considered to be the finest example of Restoration Comedy. Most of the characters in the play are entangled in a variety of schemes related to their money and reputation. The way of the World is a satire debunking the hypocrisy, intrigues, and lust in the upper class. Congreve aimed at satirizing the hypocritical life of the aristocratic class and disclosing fashionable follies with the use of sparkling wit and ridiculous farce. Furthermore, the jealousy, inconstancy, and cuckoldry which he represented on the stage are portrayed as the offshoots of unhappy sex relationship(wrong marriage) and greed, remaining subsidiary to the main theme of true love and marriage. In other words, in the play, the central theme is the delicate handling of the love game played by enlightened Mirabell and Millamant, and preserving the typical comic ending toward ideal marriage. The famous proviso scene shows Mirabell and Millamant trying to achieve a degree of understanding and equality by stating what they really want from marriage. Even though conjugal rights are ostensibly established by the marriage negotiation, the contract rather continues to reveal deep, gender-based inequalities. In addition, it seems that the contract is not opposed to patriarchy and constitutes modern patriarchy. Throughout the play, Congreve apparently describes marriage as an institution which restricts wives' freedom, causes hypocrisy and discloses gloomy prospect of marriage through the final vision of marriage that Mirabell dominates. Consequently, Congreve just represents the very life of the upper class as it is and does not offer any hope to reform the society and inequal marriage.
