국문 초록

본 연구는 이민자로 살아가는 필리핀 결혼이주여성들이 자신의 정체성을 재구성해 나가는 과정에서 문화와 공동체의 의미를 탐구하였다. 필리핀 결혼이주여성들의 공동체는 생존의 장이자 사회적 안전망으로 기능하며, 대안적 ‘home’이자 잃어버린 귀속감을 회복할 수 있는 문화적 거처의 구실을 한다. 주류사회의 차별에 맞서 여성들은 귀속을 보호하기 위한 자기 방어적인 장치로 ‘필리핀인’이라는 종족정체성에 의지하는데, 그것은 혈연에 기반한 본질적인 정체성이라기보다는 전통의 권위를 인용하는 종교적이고 세속적인 의례들, 문화적 반복의 효과로 산출되고 유지된다. 그러나 이주여성들이 종족정체성에 갇혀있는 것은 아니다. 그들은 자신들이 거주하는 사회가 좀 더 바람직한 사회가 되도록 시민사회에 참여하고, 다양한 시민사회의 구성원들과 보편적 가치와 정치적 실천을 공유하며, 이러한 과정을 통해 스스로를 국가 의존적인 결혼이민자로부터 자율적인 시민적 주체로 전환해낸다. 문화적 차이에 갇혀있기 보다 정의, 인권, 평등과 같은 보편적인 가치를 지향하는 이런 노력들은 이주자들을 종족적 소수자로 규정하기보다, 민주적인 정치공동체 안에서 자신의 권리와 의무를 협상할 능력을 지닌 책임 있는 시민으로 인정할 필요가 있다는 것을 보여준다. 이러한 시각은 종족절대주의를 넘어 보편적 가치를 확장시키고자하는 능동적인 시민들의 연대를 위한 첫 걸음이 될 것이다.

영문 초록

This article explores the meaning of the Community for the Philippine marriage-immigrant women in the process of re-compromising their identities. The Community of the Philippine marriage-immigrant women plays not only a role as a foundation of survival and social security network, but also a substitute ‘home’ to sustain their sense of belonging. For these women confronting a lack of ‘home’ without any provided protection of their belonging against devaluating, their ‘ethnic identity’ functions as their defense mechanism against the mainstream society. It should be understood, not as an essentialised sense of belonging based on blood, as an effect of performative belonging produced and sustained through cultural reiteration with citation of the authority of convention. However their identities are not restricted to ethnic identity. They actively participate in civil activities and act politically with other citizens to make Korea to be more desirable society. And they changed into civil subject through these activities pursuing the universal value like justice, human right, and equality. It shows the fact that marriage-immigrant women should be recognized as equal citizen rather than as ethnic minority. This point of view is the first step toward solidarity of active citizens pursuing realizing the universal value over ethnic absolutism.
