일제하 원주 서미감 병원의 설립과 지역사회에서의 위치

국문 초록

1910년대 이후 기독교의 의료 선교와 그것이 조선사회에 미친 영향에 대하여 강원도 원주지역에 최초로 설립된 서미감 병원의 사례를 검토하였다. 원주 서미감(瑞美監) 병원은 강원도 지역의 의료 선교 병원으로서 1913년 설립되었으며, 1933년까지 20년 동안 강원 영서 남부 지역의 거점병원으로 자리 잡고 있었다. 원주지역에 감리교 계통의 교회가 정착한 것은 1905년이었으며, 1909년 북감리 교회에서 관장하면서 강원도 남부 영서 지역을 선교지역으로 삼았다. 1910년에 미국 뉴욕의 감리교 본부는 조선 선교 25주년을 기념하여 원주에 선교 병원을 세우려고 하였다. 1913년 4월 착공한 서미감 병원은 11월 15일에 개원하였으며, 1914년 4월 22일 봉헌식을 가졌다. 병원의 이름은 미국 스웨디쉬 감리교의 이름을 따서 ‘서미감 병원’으로 불리었다. 전기(1913~1922)에는 앤더슨 의사가 헌신적인 공헌을 하여 병원이 자리를 잡았다. 1913년 1천여 건의 치료가 이루어졌고, 1919년에는 5천 건의 치료가 이루어졌으며, 치료를 통해 기독교 신자가 늘어났다. 그러나 앤더슨 선교의사가 평양의 기홀병원으로 옮겨감에 따라 병원업무는 한 동안 비워두었다가 1925년부터 맥매니스가 대신 병원을 경영하였다. 이때 조선인 의사도 참여했는데, 윤선욱, 안사영과 이은계 등은 세브란스 연합의학전문학교 출신 의사들이었다. 이들은 적극적인진료 활동과 아울러 지역 사회 운동에도 참여하였는데, 안사영은 1927년 신간회간사를 맡기도 하였다. 당시 강원도 의료 환경은 매우 열악했으며 특히 원주에는 자혜병원이나 도립병원이 설치되지 않았다. 그럼에도 불구하고 1933년 미국 선교부는 병원 운영을 포기하였으며, 1941년 원주에 도립병원을 설치하기로 함으로써 서미감 병원은 20년간 지역의 거점 병원과 지역 선교 병원으로서의 위치를 상실하게 되었다.

영문 초록

This study examines the Swedish Methodist Hospital which was built in Wonju for the first time to review the practices of the hospital about Methodist Episcopal Church's christian medical missions and its impact on society of Korea since the 1910s. The Swedish Methodist Hospital as a medical missionary hospital was founded in 1913, and situated as a base hospital for 20 years until 1933 in the southern region of Gawon Province. The Methodist Church who settled in Wonju were 1905, while Methodist Episcopal Church areas in southern Gangwon region taken as a missionary in 1909. At 1910 the Methodist Church headquarters in New York were to establish a missionary hospital to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Korea Mission at Wonju city. The Methodist Hospital began constructing in April 1913 opened the hospital on November 15, 1913 and held a dedication ceremony Apr. 22, 1914. The Methodist Hospital named the Swedish Methodist Hospital which was after the U.S. Swedish Methodist Church. On previous period(1913-1922) this hospital could not be raised unless Dr. A.G.Anderson did devoted contribution. The thousands of treatment of patients in 1913 was achieved and there were with five thousands of treatments in 1919. The number of Christians was increased by the effects of the treatments for the patients. When Dr.A.G.Anderson, a missionary doctor had moved away to Dr. Hall's Memorial Hospital, the hospital was empty for a while. Instead, Dr.S.E. McManis became a hospital management in 1925. In this time Korean doctors such as Yun Sun Yuk, Ahn Sa Young of the Severance Union Medical College graduates were involved. In addition, they had a aggressive treatment of these activities and participated in community exercises. For instance, Dr Ahn acted as a secretary of Shin-Gan Hoe at Wonju city in 1927. Gangwon health care environment at the time was very poor. Especially, Jahye hospitals and Provincial hospitals was not installed in Wonju. Nevertheless, the U.S. Methodist Episcopal Church Mission abandoned operating the hospital in 1933. Provincial hospital in 1941 was to install at Wonju city. Therefore Swedish Methodist Hospital despite local and regional mission for 20 years was losing its position as a missionary hospital.
