BYU's Montevidisco and MIT's Athena Language Learning Project and Their Applications to Teaching Foreign Languages in Korean University

국문 초록

미디어(media)를 이용한 외국어 교육은 마이크로 컴퓨터 시대의 도래와 더불어 1990년대에 들어오면서 외국어 교수 현장에서 흔히 접하는 개념이 되었다. 많은 영어교육자들은 미디어를 이용하는 외국어 학습 프로그램은 학습자들이 자기의 보조에 맞추어 학습할수 있는 신축성을 부여한다고 믿었다. 이러한 외국어 학습프로그램의 대표적인 것으로는 interactive video 프로그램을 들수 있다. 이 프로그램은 학습자에게 리얼하고 구체적인 상황을 통한 영어학습체험을 가능하게 하는 효과적인 매체로 인정되고 있다. 이러한 새로운 외국어 학습 추이에 입각하여 본 연구 논문은 미국 대학이 개발한 workstation에 기저를 둔 외국어 학습용 프로그램을 소개한다. 이들은 Brigham Young University가 개발한 Montevidisco 프로그램과 MIT가 개발한 Athena Language Learning Program이다. 본 논문은 BYU의 Montevidisco 프로그램의 응용언어학적 편제 범위와 구성 내용을 기술하는데， 이 프로그램은 영상물 interactive video 프로그램으로 처리해서 외국어 학습커리쿠럼으로 최초로 통합시킨 것이다. 또한 언어학습에 의사소통접근법의 주된 원칙을 접목시킨 ALLP 프로그램에 내장된 세가지 학습프로그램 (Natural Language Processing System, Speech Processing System， Interactive Video Programs) 의 응용언어학적 편제 범위와 구성내용을 기술한다. 본 논문은 최근의 연구 동향은 공학기술의 느린 발전으로 인하여 답보 상태를 면치 못하고 있는 자연언어를 통한 외국어 학습연구에서 interactive video 연구로 바꿔가고 있음을 밝히고 있다. 한 걸음 더 나아가 Montevidisco 와 ALLP 프로그램을 우리 대학의 외국어 교육 현장에서 응용하여 사용할수 있는 방법에 대한 구체적인 제시를 한다. 끝으로 Computer-assisted Language Learning의 발전 방향에 대하여 앞으로의 연구와 결론이 따른다.

영문 초록

The concept of media-based instruction has been ubiquitous in the American foreign language classroom since the turn of the 1990 in the wake of the emergence of the microcomputer age. Many ESL practitioners believe that media-based programs can enable students to learn material at their own pace. One important representative of these is the interactive video program, which is generally accepted as an effective medium for exposing students to authentic, contexualized language experience. In this connection, this paper reviews workstation-based foreign language programs developed at two American universities. These are the Montevidisco program developed by Brigham Young University and the Athena Language Learning Project (ALLP) developed by MIT. The paper describes the scope and content of BYU's Montevidisco program, which identified and organized visuals for interactive videodisc programmning and integrated them into the foreign language curriculum for the first time. It also describes the scope and content of the three programs housed in ALLP which underlies the major principles of a communicative approach to language learning. These are the Natural Language Processing system, the speech processing system, and interactive video programs. The paper alludes to the recent shift from NLP-based research to interactive videodisc research for foreign language teaching/learning due to the lethargic advance in techonology. Specific suggestions are made as to how to implement Montevidisco and ALLP programs in teaching foreign languages in Korean universities. These are followed by a discusion of future research directions and a conclusion to the development of Computer-Assisted Language Learning (CALL).
