노년 담론의 소설적 형상화

국문 초록

이 논문은 박완서의 단편소설 「마른 꽃」(1995)을 중심으로 작품에 나타난 노년의 심리, 노화에 대한 태도, 재혼문제, 자녀들의 부모 부양에 대한 태도 및 타자화 등에 대한 작가의 문제의식을 집중적으로 분석해 보고자 했다. 「마른 꽃」은 1인칭 주인공 화자의 소설로서 주인공은 남편과 사별한, 환갑을 앞둔 여성이다. 이 여성의 상대역인 조 박사는 3년 전에 아내와 사별했고, 1년 전에 대학에서 정년퇴직한 역사학자이다. 「마른 꽃」은 노년의 인물이 등장하고, 노년의 재혼문제를 다루었으며, 노년의 작가가 쓴 노년소설이다. 이 소설에는 동일문제에 대한 세대 차이와 그로 인한 노인의 심리적 특성이 잘 드러나고 있다. 즉, 결혼식에서의 폐백문제와 집안어른 모시기라는 점에서 고모와 조카 사이에 가치관의 차이를 노정함으로써 주인공(고모)은 섭섭함과 노여움을 넘어서서 분노를 느낀다. 주인공이 느끼는 섭섭함과 노여움이란 결국 세대차이로 인한 노년의 소외감이다. 작품의 제목에서 드러나듯 작가는 노인을 ‘마른 꽃’에 비유함으로써 생명력을 상실한 존재로 인식하고 있다. 그리고 신체나 결혼에 대한 가치기준을 젊음과 젊은이에 둠으로써 신체적 노화를 추악하고 혐오스런 것으로 인식하며, 노년의 재혼을 부정하게 된다. 하지만 작가의 노년 재혼에 대한 가치의식은 계층에 따라 차이를 나타낸다. 즉, 중산층 여성의 재혼에는 동의하지 않지만 하층여성의 생계형 재혼에 대해서는 찬성을 보인다. 이 작품에서 작가는 홀로 된 시아버지와 어머니를 둔 며느리와 딸의 이기적이고 속물적인 태도에 대해 신랄한 야유를 보낸다. 즉, 노부모의 재혼에 대해서 성인의 자녀들이 호의적이건 비호의적이건 부모의 행복에 대한 진정한 배려가 아니라 그들 자신의 입장을 우선시하고 부모를 타자화하는 이기적 태도, 즉 노인을 존중하지 않는 오늘날의 세태풍속에 대해 작가는 특유의 신랄한 비판을 아끼지 않는다. 최근 우리 사회는 급격하게 고령화 사회에 접어들었으며, 고령사회가 예상보다 빨리 다가오고 있다. 노인문제는 사회제도적 차원의 복지문제나 정년연장과 재고용 등의 경제적 차원의 과제를 안고 있을 뿐만 아니라 노년을 어떤 가치를 갖고 살아야 할 것인가라는 인문학적 차원의 과제를 동시에 안고 있다. 아직 노년문학은 장르로서 확립된 상태는 아니지만 보다 많은 노년문학이 창작됨으로써 노년문제에 대한 사회적 인식을 확산시킬 수 있을 것이며, 노년의 정체성과 연령 규범을 확립하는 데에도 도움을 줄 수 있을 것으로 기대한다.

영문 초록

In this study, focusing on Park Wan-seo’s 「Ma-reun Kkot」(1995), I try to analyze the writer’s consciousness of issues on old age’s psychology, an attitude toward aging, remarriage’s problems, attitudes and othernization about supporting parents, and so on. The main character in 「Ma-reun Kkot」, in a first-person narrative, is a woman who lost her husband through death and have the age of sixty ahead. Dr. Joe lost his wife through death three years ago and is a historian who retired under the age limit a year ago. 「Ma-reun Kkot」 has an old-aged character and deals with remarriage’s problems of old age. Moreover, it was written by an old-aged writer. This story shows a generation gap of same issues above and psychological features of an old person. That is, by showing the different values between an aunt and nephew about bride’s gifts to her parents-in-law on the wedding and taking good care of the head of a family, the hero feels disappointed and unpleasant. These feelings are just old age’s sense of alienation by the generation gap. The writer using a symbol, she compares old persons to dry flowers. Besides, by putting a standard of value of a body and marriage on youth, she regards physical aging as ugliness and hatred, and finally doesn’t accept old age’s remarriage. However, writer’s consciousness of values of old age’s remarriage varies depending on class level. She doesn’t agree to remarriage of middle class women, while she agrees to remarriage of lower-class women for living. The author denounces the selfish and snobby attitude of the daughter-in-law who have a single father-in-law and the daughter who have a mother a widow. Adult children don’t consider their aged parents’ real happiness, but prioritize their own selves and othernize their parents. There are the author’s unique criticism of these social conditions. Our community finally reached a rapidly aging society. Besides, it is approaching faster than we expected. Elderly problems need institutional, economical, and human solutions in concert. Still, gerontological literature is not a genre established, but if more gerontological literature is created, social awareness of elderly problems will spread, and old persons will be able to establish a sense of identity. Moreover, it will be helpful to make age norms.
