남북한 통합을 위한 ‘화해된 민족 동질성’에 대한 논의

국문 초록

이 논문은 민족 동질성을 고찰함으로 통일시대에 남북의 통합을 위한 유용한 통찰력을 논의하고자 한다. 첫째, 민족 동질성에 대한 믿음은 민족 공동체에 대한 의미들을 부여하기에 충분하다. 그러나 현실적으로는 더 이상 이 세상에 존재하지 않는 통일을 꿈꾸게 하는 경향이 있다. 더욱이 이산가족들은 남과 북이 하나의 민족이고 혈통이라는 생각을 가지고 남한과 북한 사이의 문화적 차이를 실감하지 못하는 경향이 강하다. 결과적으로 민족 동질성은 남과 북의 문화적 특징들을 왜면하게 만든다. 이러한 낭만적인 견해는 남한과 북한의 실제적인 문제들을 인식하지 못하게 만들고 정서적 통합을 이루는데 있어서 중요한 문제들을 간과하게 만든다. 둘째로, 학자들은 민족 동질성의 한계를 인식하기 시작했다. 그들은 민족 동질성이 남과 북한에 자리 잡고 있는 심리적이면서 정서적인 장애요소들을 인식하지 못한다고 지적한다. 분단체제 이후 적대감이라는 정서적 힘은 남한과 북한 사회에 강하게 영향을 주었다. 결국 남한과 북한은 더 이상 같은 문화와 역사적 정체성을 지니고 있다고 할 수 없을 만큼 많은 변화가 일어났다. 이것은 역사적 사건들에 대한 서로 다른 해석과 인식을 갖게 되었다는 것을 의미한다. 이러한 사실을 인식하는 것이 매우 중요하다. 셋째로, 이 논문은 남과 북의 정서적 통합을 위해‘화해된 민족 동질성’에 대해서논의한다.‘화해된 민족 동질성’은남과 북 두 사회에서 내면화된 타자성을 받아들이고, 열린 자세로 서로를 포용하고, 대위적 관점을 통해 공존의 길을 모색함으로 가능해진다.‘화해된 민족 동질성’은 대위적 관점을 제공함으로 서로에게 새롭게 소개되는 경험들을 갖게 한다. 새로운 정체성을 가지고 서로를 포용하게 만든다. 서로를 있는 모습 그대로 받아들이므로 정서적 통합을 이루는데 있어서 강력한 동인이 될 것이다.

영문 초록

This article attempt to provide useful insights for facilitating integration between South Koreans and North Koreans at the time of national unification by paying attention to the Korean ethnic homogeneity. First, Koreans have unconditionally embraced a sense of Korean ethnic homogeneity. The belief in Korean ethnic homogeneity presupposes the imagined Korean ethnic community; there no longer exist in the Korean peninsula. Koreans expected future national reunification, because they had a sense of ethnic homogeneity. It led to assume similarity between the two Koreas. More specifically, those who have families in the North tend to deny differences in areas of family and language. As a result, a sense of ethnic homogeneity rejects the perception of South-North Korea distinctions relating to historical elements of Korean society. This romantic view overlooks the real situation of the two Koreas and practical problems related to emotional integration between South Koreans and North Koreans. Second, some scholars began to recognize limits and potential harm of the Korean ethnic homogeneity. They argue that with a strong sense of Korean ethnic homogeneity, Koreans have failed to appreciate the psychological and emotional factors of the two Koreas. Emotional power as an opposing hostility toward each other has a strong influence on perception of the two Koreas. It does not acknowledge that the two Koreas no longer share the same cultural and historical identity since the division in the late 1940’s. This means that despite the common history and the same blood, the interpretation and perception on the same historical events became totally different between South and North Korea. Third, this study tries to discuss ‘reconciled ethnic homogeneity’ for emotional integration between South Koreans and North Koreans. ‘Reconciled ethnic homogeneity’ can begin with accepting the difference between South and North Koreans and can recognize the otherness that has been internalized in the two Korean societies. ‘Reconciled ethnic homogeneity’ can provide ‘contrapuntal perspective’ between each other. ‘Reconciled ethnic homogeneity’ can create an experience of the other which is then reintroduced into each other and help us love and accept North Koreans, not as we would like them to be, but as they are. ‘Reconciled ethnic homogeneity’ will be a strong cause for integration between South and North Koreans.
