무의식, 욕망, 오브제 a

국문 초록

본 논문의 목적은 라슨의 『백인 행세하기』(Passing) 속 두 물라토 여성의 삶을 통해 ‘백인 행세’에 대한 ‘옳고 그름’의 문제를 논하는 것이 아니라 정신분석학적 분석을 통해 작중 인물들의 정신세계-무의식, 욕망 그리고 욕망의 대상인 오브제 a -를 논하는 것이다. 텍스트의 표층구조에 의하면 물라토여성 중 한 명인 아이린은 흑인 남성인 브라이언과 결혼 후 흑인의 삶을 살아가지만, 클레어는 ‘백인 행세’를 통해 백인 남성과 결혼 후 백인의 삶을 살아간다. 이러한 표층구조는 아이린의 무의식을 발견함으로써 아이린이 ‘백인 행세’를 하고 있다는 심층구조를 발견하게 된다. 여기서 의식과 무의식은 라캉 이론에 의해 자아담론과 대타자 담론으로 설명되며, 나아가 텍스트의 표층구조와 심층구조로 연결된다. 아이가 어머니와의 이자 관계, 즉 상상계를 지나 아버지라는 대타자가 존재하는 ‘법’이 지배하는 상징계에 들어설 때 거세를 통한 ‘향유’를 포기함으로써 오브제 a를 실재에 남겨둔다. 이 과정을 성공적으로 통과했을 때 우리는 오이디푸스 콤플렉스를 극복했다는 표현을 쓴다. 인간은 실재계에 남겨둔 오브제 a를 끊임없이 욕망하게 되며 이에 라캉은 “인간의 욕망은 대타자의 욕망”으로 표현했다. 오브제 a 주위를 돌면서 끊임없이 상징계에 존재하는 분열된 주체를 유혹하는 ‘욕동’(drive)의 성질은 텍스트 속 클레어를 연상시키며, 반면 주체의 본능을 제어할 수 있는 ‘욕망’(desire)은 아이린을 연상시킨다. 논자는 아이린과 클레어의 심층 분석을 통해 텍스트 내 욕망과 욕동의 움직임을 살폈다. 여기서 ‘욕망의 대상’인 오브제 a는 부분대상으로 목소리, 응시 또는 어머니의 젖가슴이 될 수도 있으며, 나아가 텍스트 내 클레어와 아이린의 응시, 목소리, 발화 행위를 통한 움직임은 등장인물들이 무엇을 욕망하고 있는지를 추론할 수 있게 만든다. 마지막으로 라캉의 삼세계 - 상상계, 상징계, 실재계 -의 교집합에 존재하며 보르메오 매듭처럼 서로 엮여서 그들을 유기적으로 흘러가게 만드는 오브제 a를 다룬다. 아이린, 클레어 그리고 아이린의 남편 브라이언이 욕망의 대상인 오브제 a를 끊임없이 욕망한다는 사실은 그들의 언어, 응시 또는 반복 등을 분석함으로써 밝혀진다. 앞에서 말한 것처럼, 본문 비평의 제목들 - 무의식, 욕망, 욕동, 오브제 a -은 또한 보르메오 매듭처럼 유기적 관계를 맺고 있다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this thesis is to trace main characters’ mental worlds - the unconscious, Desire and objet a as the object of desire - through the lives of two mulatto women in Nella Larsen’s Passing. That is not to discuss what is right or not regarding ‘passing.’ According to the text, one of two mulatto women, Irene married the black man, Brian Redfield and lives as a black in the black communities, while the other mulatto woman, Clare married the white man, John Bellows and lives as a white in the white communities. However, we find the subtext under the text that not Clare but Irene is passing as whites when analyzing main characters’ unconscious. That is to say, human mental worlds, the conscious and unconscious are connected to Lacan’s the ego discourse and Other discourse, furthermore, the text and subtext. After babies pass the imaginary world(the Imaginary) that is in the relationship between mothers and babies, babies break into the symbolic world(the Symbolic) that the Other and Law control, then babies give up the jouissance by the castration and put objet a in the real world(the Real). When babies break into the Symbolic well, it means that human beings overcame the Oedipus Complex process well. Human beings desire the objet a in the Real continuously. That is related to the Lacan’s saying “Man’s desire is desire of the Other’s desire.” Drive in the Real continues to circle the objet a and it seduces the split subject in the Symbolic. This feature of Drive reminds us of Clare in the text. While Desire that can control itself suggests Irene. Here, the objet a can be something that is voice, gaze or mothers’ breast. Therefore we can trace main characters’ desire by analyzing characters’ gaze, voice or speech acts etc. Finally, there is the objet a in the intersection of Lacan’s three worlds - the Imaginary, the Symbolic and the Real, and they require close relationships centering around the objet a like a Borromeo knot. The truth that main characters, Irene, Clare and Brian desire the objet a as the subject of Desire continuously comes out in the open by analyzing their language, gaze, repetition and so on. Like the preceding, titles of textual criticism also - unconscious, desire, drive and objet a - require close relationships like a Borromeo knot.
