국문 초록

본 논문은 사춘기 이전 흑인 여아의 신체 인식과 주체성 형성 관계 규명을 목적으로 한다. 널리 알려진 바와 같이, 흑인의 신체는 노예제도 하에서 갖은 고난을 겪었으며, 노예 해방후에도 그 신체는 여전히 해방되지 않았다. 더구나 흑인 여성은 흑인이면서 동시에 여성이라는 이중고를 겪으면서 주체성은 물론, 자신의 신체조차 제대로 인식하기 힘든 상황에 처해 있었다. 본 논문은 보봐르의 『제 2의 성』을 토대로 하여 토니 모리슨의 『가장 푸른 눈』을 살펴보았다. 특히, 본 논문은 보봐르가 『제 2의 성』에서 말한 모녀와 딸, 인형의 분신관계를 기초로 하여 『가장 푸른 눈』에서 어머니 맥티어 부인-클라우디아-인형의 관계와 브리드러브 부인-피콜라-인형의 분신관계를 살펴보았다. 그 결과, 클라우디아의 어머니 맥티어 부인은 흑인 여성이라는 불리한 삶의 조건에 굴하지 않고, 어려움을 노래로 승화시키는 등 자신에 대한 자긍심을 잃지 않는다. 이러한 건강성은 딸 클라우디아에게 전해지며, 클라우디아는 페니스의 대체물로 주어지는 백인 인형을 거부한다. 또 그녀는 흑인 여자인 자신의 신체를 긍정하며 인종적, 성적정체성을 확립해 나간다. 반면, 피콜라의 어머니 브리드러브 부인은 성하지 못한 다리로 인해, 자기 신체를 긍정하지 못 하며, 이는 딸인 피콜라에게 그대로 전해진다. 피콜라는 인형의 대체물로 주어진 셜리 템플이나 메리제인을 우상화하고 자신의 신체와 자기 존재 자체를 부정한다. 그 결과 피콜라는 비극적 결말을 맞게 된다. 결론적으로, 자신의 신체를 긍정할 수 있었던 클라우디아는 인형 같은 여자 아이의 성장과정을 거부하고 그것을 대체할 새로운 가치를 발견하는 즉, 주체성 획득으로 이어진다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this thesis is to investigate the relation between the recognition on the body and subjectivity before puberty of African American girls. African Americans’ bodies suffered from slavery. During the time, their bodies were sold and bought, inherited, slaughtered, kidnapped, burned and castrated. Especially, the predicament of African American women were much more harsh than that of African American men. In case of women, sexual abuse was added. From this historical fact, I came up to the studying of the relation between the women’s body and subjectivity. In addition, my interest is limited in pre-puberty. Because, in this period, their bodies are not fully grown. So the conception on the body can be more important than in any other period. Therefore, I examine Toni Morrison’s The Bluest Eye based on The Second Sex written by Simone de Beauvoir. This book defines the relations of mother, daughter and a doll as incarnations. According to Beauvoir, a daughter is her mother’s incarnation. Likewise, a doll is a daughter, a young girl’s double. Therefore, I search the relations among Mrs. McTeer-Claudia-a doll and Mrs. Breedlove-Pecola-the substitute dolls. As a result of this, I can find Mrs. McTeer takes pride in her race, and gender. This kind of strength is passed to Claudia, and her daughter refuses a white baby doll. I conclude it is a substitute penis. Besides, she affirms her body as a female and African American. Finally, she forms her race and gender identity. On the contrary, Mrs. Breedlove couldn’t get positive thought on her body because of her disabled leg. Instead of that, she is indulged in white movie stars in Hollywood movies. She denies her own race and gender. Her identity is passed to her daughter, Pecola. She idolizes Shirley Temple and Mary Jane which were given as substitute dolls. She wishes her body to disappear. At last, she faces the tragic ending. In conclusion, Claudia who affirmed her body denied a girl’s identity as a doll. Thus she can acquire subjectivity. However, Pecola who wanted to be treated like a doll can’t get subjectivity.
