국문 초록

이 연구에서는 최근에 사용이 급증하고 있는 스마트폰이 대학수업에서의 학생들의 비 학습활동에 어떠한 영향을 미치는지를 살펴보았다. 이를 위해서 마케팅조사에서 최근 부각되고 있는 정성조사 기법인 shadowing(shadow tracking) 방법과 후속 면담방법을 활용하였다. 우선 16개의 수업에서 대학생들이 스마트폰을 어떻게 사용하고 있으며, 본인들은 이를 어떻게 인식하고 있는지 분석하였다. 또한 스마트폰의 사용 이후 대학생들이 ‘수업 중에 하는 비 학습활동’의 유형과 시간할애가 휴대폰 사용이 일반화되지 않았던 1996-2001년의 수업상황 및 스마트폰이 아닌 일반 휴대폰의 사용이 일반적이었던 2007-2010년의 수업상황에 비하여 어떻게 달라졌는지 분석하였다. 이 연구의 결과는 대학 수업을 설계하고 운영함에 있어서, ‘스마트폰’이라는 변수를 고려할 수밖에 없게 되었음을 보여준다.

영문 초록

This study was carried out by shadow tracking thirteen college students, who are users of smartphones, during sixteen classes at four universities. The purpose was to understand the influence of smartphones on college students' off-task behavior. The findings were that half of the students used their smartphones for more than 30% of the class hours. Five students used their smartphones for more than 50% of the class hours. They used smartphones mostly for off-task activities such as Kakao Talk, Twitter, Facebook, Mobile Games, Internet searches, and sharing the results of their searches with friends. The results from the observations of college students' behavior administered in a 2007-2010 study showed very different findings. The use of mobile phones (mostly feature phones at that time) consisted of only 20.5% of students' off-task behavior, even though it was on the top of the list of off-task behavior. In a 1996-2001 study, the use of mobile phones was even less significant in the college classroom. It consisted of only 5.4% of off-task behavior. Since smartphones provide so much fun for students, they seem to have replaced other off-task behavior during class time. Smartphone users do not read novels in class anymore. Students chat less and even doze less in class because they can turn to their smartphones at every opportunity including presentations by other students and less important lectures by professors. Now professors have to find ways to compete with smartphones for their students' attention.
