마조 선사의 사상과 그 교육학적 의미

국문 초록

이 논문은 동아시아 사회에 종교적, 사상적으로 큰 영향을 끼친 선불교의 조사(祖師) 마조선사의 사상과 그 사상이 지니고 있는 교육학적 의미를 찾아보는데 그 목적이 있다. 이를 위해 제2장 ‘마조의 생애와 시대’에서는 출가 이후 스승 남악 회양과의 만남을 비롯하여 그의 교화 행적을 고찰하였으며, 그가 살던 시대가 수도권 중심의 교학불교에서 지방을 근거지로 하는 실천 중심의 선불교로 관심이 전환되기 시작하던 시기라는 점을 지적했다. 제3장 ‘마조의 사상’에서는 ‘즉심시불(卽心是佛)’, ‘평상심시도(平常心是道)’, ‘도불용수(道不用修)’ 등의 개념으로서 그의 선사상을 정리하였다. 제4장 ‘마조사상의 교육학적 논의’에서는 마조의 교육론을 마음교육론이라 규정하고, 마음교육의 개념과 방법, 사-제 관계 등에 대하여 고찰하였다. 제5장 ‘결론’에서는 마조의 교육론이 현대 교육에 주는 시사점을 논하였다. 이 논문에서는 마조의 사상을 마음사상, 즉 심학으로 규정하고, 마조의 교육론을 마음교육론으로 요약하였다. 마조의 교육론은 현대 학교 교육과 같이 학습자의 기능이나 역량 개발에 초점을 두는 ‘부가’, ‘형성’의 교육관, 조형의 교육관이 아니라 대자재인을 목표로 하여 자신의 마음을 ‘반조(返照)’하는 반조의 교육관이라는 데 그 특징이 있다는 점을 논문에서 제시하였다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this research is to investigate the Zen master Ma Zu(馬祖)’s thought and its educational meaning, that has religious and philosophical influence in East Asian society. The paper is divided into five chapters. In Chapter Ⅰ, ‘Introduction’ examines the learning characteristics of East Asia in pre-modern society is mind studies, and described the necessity of educational research into Ma Zu(馬祖), founder of Zushi-Zen(祖師禪). Chapter Ⅱ focuses on ‘The Ma Zu’s career and His period’, which covers timeline of Ma Zu’s entering the Buddhist priesthood, practicing, spiritual awakening and educational trace, etc. Also, Chapter Ⅱ emphasizes on Ma Zu’s lifetime. Ma Zu lived in transition period, which transits from theoretical Buddhism located in the city area to the practical Zen Buddhism located in the rural area. Chapter III summarizes ‘Ma Zu’s thought’, Ma Zu’s Zen thought as ‘卽心是佛’, which means ‘My mind is Buddha’; ‘平常心是道’, which means ‘Normal mind is Buddha’; ‘道不用修’, which means ‘Normal mind is unnecessary for cultivating’. Chapter IV covers ‘Educational discussion of Ma Zu’s thought’, the core of Ma Zu’s educational thought is contemplating mind, and examined the concept and method of contemplating mind, Master-Follower relationship, etc. Chapter Ⅴ ‘conclusion’ concludes educational suggestion of Ma Zu’s thought and pointed out Ma Zu’s educational idea. Ma Zu’s educational method stressed the essence of education contrast to when modern educational system stresses developing one’s function or ability.
