어린이를 위한 죽음교육의 가능성과 필요성

국문 초록

오늘날 어린이를 위한 죽음교육은 생명경시문제, 교육에 있어서의 다양한 문제를 극복하기 위한 하나의 대안으로 인식되어, 유럽, 미국, 일본 등에서 적극적으로 실시되고 있다. 그러나 우리나라에서는 어린이를 대상으로 하는 죽음교육이 비교적 소극적인데, 그 이유는 어린이 역시도 죽음과 긴밀한 연관을 가진 죽음에의 존재라는 것에 대한 인식의 부족에 있다. 이러한 문제의식으로부터 본 연구는 어린이를 죽음과 긴밀한 관계를 가진 존재로서 재인식을 통해, 어린이를 대상으로 하는 죽음교육의 필요성과 가능성을 제안하는데 그 목적이 있다. 먼저 어린이는 어른과 필연적으로 구분되는 이질적인 존재가 아니다. 어른과 어린이의 구분은 어린이를 보호하고, 교육받을 아동의 권리를 보호하기 위한 의도에서 인위적으로 만들어진 것으로, 어린이가 어른에 비해 부족하거나 결함이 있는 존재라는 의미는 아니다. 어린이는 그 자체로 전인적인 완전한 인간으로, 단지 발달론에 따라 단계적으로 발달해가는 존재가 아니라, 비약적, 수직적인 성장의 가능성 또한 가진 존재이다. 최근 연구에 의하면 9살 전후의 어린이는 죽음에 대한 지식적인 의미를 거의 완벽하게 이해하고 있을 뿐만 아니라, 죽음이라는 대상과 실존적으로 만나 고뇌하는 존재라는 것이 밝혀졌다. 이와 같은 죽음과 긴밀한 관계를 가진 어린이에 대한 이해는, 어린이에게 죽음교육이 가능할 뿐 아니라 반드시 필요하다는 사실을 알려 준다. 무엇보다도, 어린이에게 있어서 죽음이라는 문제는, 제도적인 죽음교육을 논하기 이전에 이미 어린이 스스로가 전심전령으로 대면하고 있는 실존적인 과제임을 잊어서는 안 될 것이다.

영문 초록

In modern society, death education for children is recognized as an alternative way to overcome diverse problems in education, and is actively implemented in such regions as Europe, the U.S., and Japan. In Korea however, death education for children is relatively inactive and the reason for this is the lack of understanding that children are also mortal beings closely related to death. Armed with this critical thinking, the purpose of this study is to present the necessity and possibility of death education for children through new understanding that children are closely related to death. First, children are not disparate beings inevitably distinguished from adults. The distinction between children and adults is artificially made in order to protect children and children’s right to receive education, so it does not mean that children are inferior to or more defective than adults. Children are holistic perfect humans in themselves, and are beings not merely developing by stages but also having the possibility of rapid and vertical growth. Recent research has revealed that children around the age of nine not only understand the meaning of death, but also agonize over encountering death existentially. Analysis of children proves that they have a close relationship with death and highlights the fact that providing death education for children is not only possible but also necessary. Above all things, it should not be forgotten that the issue of death is an existential task which children have already faced with all of their heart and strength, long before institutional death education is given.
