국문 초록

본 연구는 1990년대 고학력화의 본격적 세대의 여성들이 세계화로 인한 노동시장의 구조변동의 맥락에서, 직장, 결혼, 출산, 양육 등의 생애단계를 밟으면서, 일과 가족 관계의 재조정에 어떻게 ‘대응’하고 있는지를 생애과정 관점으로 분석한다. 이 연구의 대상인 70⋅80년대 초 출생 대졸 여성들은 고학력자로서 강한 노동정체성을 가졌으며 동시에 친밀한 공간으로서의 부부중심 핵가족에 대한 가족정체성을 가졌다. 그러나 이 여성들은 경쟁주의적 노동규범을 부추기는 노동시장 구조, 그리고 한편으로는 ‘가족최소화’ 전략, 다른 한편으로는 남성 생계부양자 핵가족 규범을 내세우는 남편과의 젠더관계 구조에서 자신들의 노동정체성과 가족정체성의 불편한 공존을 체험하게 되었다. 이 여성들의 일-가족 관계의 재조정 과정과 대응들은 일-생활 불균형을 초래하는 사회구조들의 실체를 드러나게 해주었으며, 동시에 구조 재생산의 불안정성과 균열, 그리고 구조 변화의 가능성을 보여주었다.

영문 초록

This study analyzes the ways in which highly educated women have reshaped the work-family relations when they, situated in the transformation of the labor market under the influences of globalization, have taken their life courses - employment, marriage, child-bearing, and child-care. These women who were born in the early 70s and 80s are the first cohort group who benefited from Korea's rapid diffusion of higher education since the 1990s. In-depth interviews are utilized in the analysis from the life course perspective. This cohort group of women, university graduates born in the early 70s and 80s, acquired a strong 'work identity', and 'family identity' oriented toward an intimate couple-centered nuclear family as well. These women, however, experienced the unbalanced coexistence of work and family identities. They faced a very competitive and flexible labor market structure with long working hours on the one hand, and they had to deal with the gender relations structure shaped and actualized by their husbands' life patterns and choices to either pursue market-conforming work norms and lifestyles or to strengthen male breadwinner family model on the other hand. These women's responses in reshaping the work and family relations disclosed the structural entities that had brought about the work-life unbalance. Furthermore, they manifested the instability of structural reproduction, structural contradictions, and the possibility of structural change.
