In 1453(the first year of Danjong), Prince Suyang got up a rebellion called Gyeyujungnan by himself, and get rid of Kim Chong-so, Hwangbo In and other ministers of Uijongbu. As a result of this rebellion, he established base of rising to the throne. Next year, Prince Suyang take the most important post that control all civil and military officials by himself, so Danjong’s sovereign power was incapacitated. At last, in 1455(third year of king Danjong) September, Prince Suyang accede to the throne by himself(called Sejo). After got throne, Sejo give the title of a vassal of merit that be called Jungnangongshin and Jwaikgongshin to his followers. It made them his core henchmen. Sejo’s usurpation called many victims. As a result of Sayuksin(six executed ministers) case, Seong Sam-mun and over seventy men were punished. And their family members, were executed or were divided as slave of other ministers. To one side, a family quarrel happened between the members of Royal family. For example, In 1453, Prince Anpyong(Lee Yong) who was banished in Ganghwa island, was executed on suspicion of being the rebel. And In 1455, Prince Kumsung was banished in Saknyung, and the next year, was transported in Sunhung. And Danjong was banished in Yeongwol. At last, all of them were executed. Sejo exercised his sovereign power strongly in his years. But to one side, maybe he had suffer from the guilty conscience because of the lack of justification and lineal descent of royalty. Sejo became the most religious Buddhist king in the late part of his life. Maybe its causes are family unhappiness and his Malignant dermatosis. Especially, death of his eldest prince was the great pain to him. At the time of eldest prince’s death, Sejo closed a morning meeting and market for five days, prohibited king’s good food, and wore white mourning clothes for thirty days. A rumor rose that death of Sejo’s eldest prince was the result of a spiritual attack of Queen Hyunduk who mother of Danjong. And a myth exists that Sejo had a bath with clear water of Odae mountain’s valley that exists Sangwonsa to heal his dermatosis. This episode have a relation with Munsudonja. Maybe Sejo wants to dissolve his pains with the power of Buddha. His act that established Gangyungdogam and published many Buddhist scriptures in it was not exception of this purpose. But there are very little try that try to examine exactly establishing Wongaksa and renewal of Sanwonsa. They are very important point of Sejo’s buddhist service. I want to clarify by this text are the meaning of representative point of Sejo’s buddhist service-establishing Wongaksa and renewal of Sanwonsa-and the real purpose of Sejo’s buddhist service. The purpose of establishing Wongaksa was strengthen Sejo’s sovereign power. And the purpose of renewal of Sangwonsa were heal the sickness of Sejo’s later years and the pacification work to people. these conclusions were clarified in this text.
