영문 초록

Through contact with English-speaking countries, Korean (K), Chinese (C), and Japanese (J) have borrowed and integrated many English words into their lexicons. In borrowing English words into their languages, the three languages have adopted the two major methods: (ⅰ) transcription of the English words, and (ⅱ) translating and coining new words by using Chinese characters. In transcribing English words, Chinese, syllable-based writing characters, has limitations, but it is efficient and economic in translating and coining new words. Based on this observation, this study first discusses problems of transcribing or translating English loanwords into those three languages in terms of the Saussurean theory of semantics/semiotics. Second, it examines and compares problems in transcribing English words into those three languages. Third, this research discusses how Korean has borrowed and integrated English loanwords into its lexicon in the course of history. Fourth, this study shows problems in cooperating with each other in borrowing and integrating English words into those three East-Asian languages.
