영문 초록

This paper deals with the tea culture of grassroots in the late 18th to early 19th century Chosun dynasty according to the records of the 'Sesigi (Writings on Seasonal Customs)'. Sesigi is reflecting the everyday lives of the grassroots. For grassroots, tea has been utilized as preserving food consumed in Autumn and Winter time and as beverage representing courtesies by meaning compliments, serenity, right-mindedness, and proprieties. There seems to be three aspects of tea culture: Firstly, tea was a catalyst in communicating with gods. It was a intermediary beverage to communicate with gods and an offering in thanksgiving. This function of tea is closely related with religious ceremony. Secondly, tea was both food in shared with families and neighbors and gift with gratitude at the end of the year, focusing on socio-ethical function. Thirdly, tea functioned as amusement beverage at the time for leisure and relaxation. These features of tea culture described in Sesigi suggest that Korean grassroots tea culture has been adapted and embedded through everyday use in the lives of grassroots, especially contributions from Jeong Yak-yong's and Cho-i's distinct teacultivating, tea-producing, and tea-drinking methodologies.
