학교별 연간 성취수준 향상에 기초한 수행지수 산출 및 학교특성 비교

국문 초록

학교별로 진입하는 학생들의 초기성취를 포함한 개인배경이 다른 점을 고려해본다면 단일시점의 성취도 자료를 이용한 학교의 교육효과에 대한 분석은 형평성의 문제를 포함한 여러 문제점을 내포하고 있다. 두 시점의 자료를 이용한 분석에서도 특히 전년도에 부진한 성취수준을 기록한 학교의 향상도가 커질 가능성 혹은 그 반대의 경우를 포함한 천정효과, 평균으로의 회귀 등의 요인이 실재할 경우, 단순한 향상도를 기초로 한 학교비교는 편파된 결과를 산출할 가능성이 있다. 이러한 문제점들을 고려하여 본 연구에서는 전년도의 성취수준 및 학교를 구성하는 학생의 사회경제적 수준을 고려한 당해 연도의 성취수준을 학교간 비교의 준거로 제시하고, 이를 분석하기 위한 다층모형을 제시하였다. 제시된 모형을 통한 학교수행지수는 ‘SES 및 전년도 학업수준이 비슷한 학교들을 비교했을 경우 해당 학교가 올해 얼마나 더 혹은 덜 성취했는가?’로 정의될 수 있다. 기대 이상의 성취를 보인 학교의 특성을 탐색한 결과, 수행지수의 학교간 변산 중 약 7~12%정도가 학교의 노력과 관련된 요인에 의해 설명되는 것으로 나타났다. 이는 학교의 적극적인 노력을 통해 비슷한 여건의 학교들보다 더 높은 향상도를 이루어 낼 수 있다는 점을 실증적으로 보여준 결과라 할 수 있다.

영문 초록

In this study, 2008 and 2009 NAEA results were linked at school level to explore individual schools' achievement change and to develop improvement-based school performance index. Given the fact that each schools' incoming students are different in terms of many correlates of achievement such as initial achievement level and student backgrounds, assessing schools' performance based on one time point test results can raise fairness problem. Even with school level two time points repeated data, simple improvement measure can cause biased inference on individual schools' effectiveness because of possible correlation between initial status and improvement, especially if initially low-performing schools present higher improvement than initially high-performing schools (i.e, ceiling effect). Considering these problems, this study suggested a multilevel model for 2009 achievement that takes into account 2008 achievement status and schools' socio-economic status. From the model, school performance index is defined as the difference between actual 2009 academic performance and expected 2009 score among schools with the same 2008 score and school SES. Based on the estimated school performance index, this study explored the school characteristics that are associated with positive (higher than expected) school performance index. Result shows that the effect of school level efforts varies across school level (primary, middle and high schools). However, about 10~12% of the between-school change-based performance variation is attributable to factors that are manipulable by schools' effort.
