영문 초록

This paper shows that positional adverbials exhibit restrictions on their compatibility with present perfects. The generalization that emerges is that a PTI modified by a positional adverbial may not include the reference time, unless the positional adverbial is anaphoric to the reference time. This new generalization forces us to rethink the XN theory of the perfect. I propose a version of the 'Extended Now' view of the perfect(Iatridou et al. 2001; Pancheva 2003), and an analysis of the structure and meaning of the perfect that has the following two characteristics: (i) it is unified, in the sense that it assigns a single structure and a single meaning to all perfect expressions; (ⅱ) it attributes the ambiguities in the perfect to the different contribution of the various aspectual categories embedded in the perfect.
