국문 초록

범주는 유사한 특성이나 기능을 지닌 일군의 무리를 묶은 개념 집합으로 자연범주가 원형적 구조를 보인다는 것은 매우 잘 알려진 사실이다. 언어를 구성하는 범주 중 하나인 접두사 역시 이러한 원형적 구조를 보이는데, 이는 전형적인 접두사가 있는가 하면 명사나 관형사, 동사나 부사 등 다른 범주와의 경계에 놓여 있는 접두사도 있고, 또 다른 범주에도 중복하여 나타나는 접두사도 있다는 것에 근거한다. 원형적 구조로 상정된 접두사의 내부 구조는 통시적으로 다른 범주에서 접두사로 발달하는 요소들에 대해 원형 구조의 외부에서 중심으로 이동하는 것으로 자연스럽게 설명될 수 있다. 동시에 각각의 언어 범주들은 물리학에서의 위상구조처럼 각자 영역을 가지되 서로 영향을 주고받으며 꾸준히 변화한다. 이러한 가정은 다중범주의 특성을 보이는 다양한 언어 요소들을 획일적인 기준들에 대한 예외적 현상이 아니라 언어의 일반적 양상으로 처리할 수 있는 가능성을 열어 준다. 아울러 원형적 구조를 이루고 있는 접두사들의 전형성은 계량적 수치화를 통해 밝히기 보다는 각 접두사 간의 비교를 통해 상대적 서열로 드러내는 것이 좀더 효과적이다. 이는 지금까지도 접두사에 대한 정확한 판별 기준이나 일관성 있는 목록의 제시가 이루어지지 못한 것과 궤를 같이 한다.

영문 초록

A category is a conceptual set based on the possession of similar properties or functions and it is well known that a natural category has a prototypical structure. Thus, the prefix, as one of the categories which makes up language, also has a prototypical structure. But whereas some prefixes evince the properties of prototypical prefixes, others are located at the interface between prefix and adjacent categories, such as noun, verb, adverb, and pre-noun. The internal structure of the prototypical category of prefix makes it possible to explain diachronic genesis of prefixes from substantial category to prefix category as the movement of language elements from periphery to core of the prototypical prefix category. Moreover, every language category has its own core territory in addition to spaces it shares in common with other categories, and these spaces affect each other much like topological spaces in physics. This supposition opens up the possibility of viewing certain phenomena and/or language elements not as exceptions to standardized criteria but as general features of language usage. Moreover, the degree of typicality of a prefix in prototypical structure is best assessed by identifying relative rankings of prefixes via comparisons among prefixes rather than via quantitative measurement.
