국문 초록

본고의 목적은 종래에 주어적 속격이라 불리어 온 구성의 통사적 지위가 무엇인지 새삼 고찰해 보려는 것이다. 전통적으로 주어적 속격 구성은 명사절 또는 관형사절의 주어로 이해되어 온바 대부분의 논의에서는 내포절의 주어가 왜 속격표지 결합형으로 나타나는지를 설명하는 데 지면을 할애해 왔다. 그러나 본고는 주어적 속격이라 일컬어져 온 구성의 통사적 지위가 과연 내포절의 주어인지, 그러한 구성이 후행 성분에 대해 의미상 주어로 이해된다는 사실이 주어적 속격을 상정함으로써 발생하는 문법 기술의 유표성을 설명해 주는 근거가 될 수 있는지 의심하지 않을 수 없다. 본고는 현대 국어 코퍼스 및 중세 국어의 몇몇 문헌 자료를 토대로 실제의 언어현상을 기술하고자 시도하였으며 그 결과 종래에 주어적 속격이라 불리어 오던 구성은 일반적인 속격에 지나지 않음을 검증해 보았다.

영문 초록

This study aims to describe the grammatical characteristics of the genitivus subjectivus -uy in Korean and prove that the unmarked phenomenon is for NPs preceding the -uy to be the logical subjects of the following NPs. In spite of the fact that the constituents with genitive case marker -uy do not generally act as an attribute of embedded clauses, it has been pointed out that the genitivus subjectivus -uy merges the VP with syntactic atoms such as -um, -ki, -un, -nun and -ul. In order to explain away this markedness, earlier studies argued that the genitivus subjectivus -uy is a case marker, and hence that the preceding NPs have been raised from the embedded clause, and tried to explain the alternation in case markers by transformational rule. In this paper, it is argued that the markedness in question can be explained from the fact that the constructions in ‘(X)V-um’, ‘(X)V-ki’ preceded by -uy are not embedded clauses but nouns, and that the constructions in ‘(X)V-un/nun/ul’ preceded by the genitivus subjectivus -uy are beyond corpus-based observation.
