다중 어휘부 구조 가설의 실험심리학적 검증

국문 초록

본고는 다중 어휘부 구조 가설의 내용을 확인하고 그 가설을 심리학적 실험을 통해 뒷받침하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 다중 어휘부 구조 가설에 따르면 파생 접사에 대한 인식은 관련 파생어들을 통해 간접적으로 이루어지므로 접사에 대한 어휘 판단은 관련 파생어에 대한 어휘 판단보다 느리게 수행된다. 본고는 어휘 판단에 소요되는 그와 같은 시간 차이를 실험 가설로 하는 심리학적 실험을 수행하였다. 컴퓨터를 이용해 피험자들이 생산적 접사 ‘-적, -질, -개’에 대한 어휘 판단 과제를 수행하는 데 걸리는 시간과 각 접사의 관련 파생어에 대한 어휘 판단 과제를 수행하는 데 걸리는 시간을 측정하고, 그 측정 결과에 대한 추론 통계를 통해 실험 가설을 검증한 것이다. 그에 따르면 접사 ‘-질’과 ‘-개’는 인식론적 간접성을 보인 반면 접사 ‘-적’은 인식론적 간접성을 보이지 않았다. 앞의 두 접사와 관련된 실험 결과는 기존의 형태론 논의에서 규칙으로 기술된 바 있는 생산적 파생 접사조차 간접적으로 인식된다는 것을 의미한다. 이것은 해당 파생 접사가 어휘부 안에 독자적 개념 지식 표상을 가지지 못하기 때문이며 이러한 현상은 인지형태론의 다중 어휘부 구조 가설을 직접적으로 뒷받침하는 것이다. 접사 ‘-적’과 관련된 실험 결과는 다중 어휘부 구조 가설을 직접적으로 뒷받침하지는 않지만 이율배반적인 현상으로 해석될 수도 없다. 본고는 인식론적 간접성을 연속성을 가지는 개념으로 파악하고 심층 어휘부에 저장된 파생 접사들이 다양한 수준의 인식론적 간접성을 보이는 것으로 해석함으로써 접사 ‘-적’과 관련된 실험 결과를 다중 어휘부 구조 가설 안에 포괄하였다.

영문 초록

This study aims to verify the multiple-layered lexicon hypothesis through psychological experimentation. The hypothesis of the experiments in this study is that the reaction times for affixes like ‘-cek’, ‘-cil ’, and ‘-kay ’ are longer than those for the complex nouns related to each respective affix. This is because affixes have epistemological indirectness, and speakers recognize affixes through complex words that incorporate them. Reaction times were calculated by computer while the subjects figured out three different lexical decision tasks. The results from the experiments revealed that the affixes ‘-cil ’ and ‘-kay ’ have epistemological indirectness while the affix ‘-cek’ does not. This means that even highly productive affixes such as ‘-cil ’ and ‘-kay’ that have been described previously by rule are recognized indirectly. This means that the affixes in question do not possess independent conceptual markers in the lexicon, and thus provides direction evidence for the multiple-layered lexicon hypothesis in cognitive morphology. The results with respect to affix ‘-cek’ do not support this hypothesis directly, but cannot be interpreted as counter-evidence, either. This study suggests that epistemological indirectness is a continuum, and that derivational affixes stored deep in the lexicon can evince a wide variety of degrees of epistemological indirectness.
