국문 초록

본 연구는 미국대학에 재학하는 한인 유학생과 미국학생의 자존감(self-esteem)을 문화 및 환경적 요인을 근거로 비교분석함으로서, 두 집단 간 차이를 발생하는 요인은 무엇이며, 그 요인은 어디에 기인된 것인지를 설명하는데 목적을 두고 있다. 연구는 미국 서부 켈리포니아주의 세 캘리포니아 주립대학교(California State University in Fullerton, Los Angeles, San Bernardino)에 재학하는 한인 유학생 100명과 미국학생 100명을 대상으로 진행되었다. 한인 유학생들은 한인학생회를 통해 만난 학생들이었으며, 미국학생들은 기숙사, 학생회관, 학생식당 등의 장소에서 우연히 접촉한 학생들이었다. 학생들에게 사용된 측정도구는 ‘자존감 측정 설문지(Adult Form of the Self-Esteem Inventories: SEI)’이었으며, 이 설문지는 사람들의 사회, 학교, 가족, 자기 자신에 대한 내면적 태도를 측정 평가하는 도구로 총 25문항으로 구성되어 있다. 본 연구는 분산분석을 주요 통계분석 방법으로 사용하였다. 연구결과 한인 유학생들은 미국학생들보다 낮은 자존감을 보이는 것으로 나타났으며, 이는 캠퍼스생활, 수업, 언어, 재정적 문제 등등, 다양한 문제에 기인된 것으로 해석되어 이에 대한 다양한 토론이 이루어졌다.

영문 초록

The primary purpose of this study was to investigate self-esteem between Korean international and Caucasian American college students on the basis of the influence of cultural backgrounds and environmental factors. The total of 100 Korean international and 100 Caucasian American college students completed the Adult Form of the Self-Esteem Inventories (SEI). A one-way ANOVA was run for implications of positive results supporting the hypothesis that self-esteem of Korean international college students rated lower than that of Caucasian American college students. Korean international students were rated themselves differently based on leisure time with Americans and classification in the U.S. The results of this study indicated that several unique problems (e.g. language problems, financial stress, accommodation difficulties, and so on) influenced their self-esteem on campus life.
