영문 초록

Pollock is widely distributed in both temperate and arctic waters of the North Pacific, from the East Sea and Sea of Okhotsk in the west, across the Aleutian archipelago and south to California in the east. It is particularly abundant in the Bering Sea and Gulf of Alaska, where it is one of the dominant species. It is exploited by a variety of countries. In an effort to allow stocks to rebuild in the Central Bering Sea, following their collapse in the early 1990s, signatories to the Convention on the Conservation and Management of Pollock Resources in the Central Bering Sea (China, Japan, Korea, Poland, Russia and the USA) have maintained a moratorium on commercial pollock in the Convention area since 1993. Despite the moratorium, pollock stocks beyond 200 mile coastal state limits remain in poor condition. The purpose of this study is to present the status of the Korean pollack fishery and the analysis on the Convention. Traditionally, pollack and pollack fishery is very important in Korea. Currently, pollock prices are rising rapidly because there is no pollack fishing in Korea coastal fishery. Especially, Korea Pollack industry has been a pain in the moratorium by the Convention. Therefore, Korea should try to revise the agreement. In addition, should actively participate in the trial fishing.
