The main goal of this article is to assist researchers to use various written and audiovisual materials. preserved at the two major archives in St. Petersburg. for the development of multimedia contents. Despite the general. economic crisis Russian archives are struggling to keep their doors open for public research and are exerting their energies in present electronic information to scholars and other researchers from throughout the world. The result. however. is not rewarded enough. considering the effort involved. Two chapters devoted to history and collection of two archives. RGIA(Rossiiskii gosudarstvennyi istoricheskii arkhiv) holds the major records of high- level and central state and administrative institutions and agencies of tsarist Russia from the nineteenth century to 1917 (except the records of the Army. Navy. and the Ministry of Foreign Mfairs). as well as fonds of social organizations. institutions. and individuals of prerevolutionary Russia. The archive received its present name in June 1992. and before 1961 was known as TsGIAL. The Leningrad State Archive of Film. Photo and Phonographic Documents (LGAKFFD) was organized in 1966 and in 1987 was transformed into the Central State Archive of Film. Photo and Phonographic Documents of the city of Leningrad (St. Petersbmg from 1991: Tsentral' nyi gosudarstvennyi arkhiv kinofotofonodokumentov St. Peterburga). The archive holds documentary audiovisual materials from different institutions and organizations of the city of St. Petersburg and Leningrad Oblast. as well as those received from state and political leaders. public figures. artists. scientists. and scholars. The life of prerevolutionary Russia is represented by photographs. that depict the construction and operation of railways. ports and canals. and public transportation. and the economic development of the capital. They also characterize the daily life of various social layers of the population. There are many views of the activities of the scientific. cultural. educational. and philanthropic societies and organizations. Especially survey of holdings in the state archives offers detailed information on the system for classification of these huge amounts of pnmary sources. The structure use in a separate various collections will it make a re latively simple work for developers interested in converting materials on Russian spiritual life to digital contents. And we are advised from Russian experience to look at a leading role of professional hi storians in the process of making mult imedia contents in areas of culture. as well as the obtain archive materials for mult imedia contents.
