서예를 이용한 서체(Font)개발 연구

국문 초록

한글 활자체들은 역사의 흐름 속에서 갈고 닦여 시대적 쓰임새에 맞도록 아름답게 발전되어 왔다. 한글 글자꼴의 변천사적인 의미에서 보면 분명 서예를 이용한 서체 개발은 대단히 중요한 의미를 갖는다고 본다. 본고에서는 1994년 月汀 정주상의 ‘한글정자쓰기체’와 ‘한글흘림쓰기체’에서부터 2006년 空齋 진영근의 전각서체(24종)까지 서예를 기반으로 한 디지털서체(Digital Font)개발 사례를 중심으로 살펴보고자 한다. 이와 같은 연구를 위해 서체개발 원작자와 제작회사, 개발과정에 참여하였던 사람들과 직접 디자인 작업을 담당하였던 디자이너와 인터뷰하였다. 이를 통해 서체 개발동기, 제작과정, 현재 시점에서 원작자와 서체개발사, 디자이너의 만족도, 문제점 등을 파악할 수 있었다. 이러한 연구결과 서예를 이용한 서체 개발 작업은 기본적으로 3부분(원작자의 충실한 원도 작업(KS5601 기준 한글 2,350자, 한자 4,888자), 서체회사의 치밀한 기획력 그리고 서체 디자이너의 서예에 대한 이해를 바탕으로 작가의 작품세계를 이해하려는 노력)의 긴밀한 협력적인 관계에서 보다 질적으로 향상된 품질을 보장 할 수 있는 서체가 만들어진다는 것을 알 수 있었다. 아울러 본 연구를 통해 서체개발의 바람직한 개발모델을 제시하는데 일조하고자 한다.

영문 초록

Korean font types have evolved into various and beautiful forms for the use of all ages, through a long history of sophistication. In the historical view of the change in Korean font types, the invention of font using calligraphy has its great meaning in many ways. In this research, we seek to survey the examples and trends of recent digital font creations using calligraphy, ranging from calligrapher Weoljung ChungJooSang`s ‘Hangeuljungzasseugiche (Korean block-form calligraphy)'and 'Hangeulhulrimsseugiche(Korean scrubbling-form calligraphy)' in 1994 to Gongja Jinyeongkeun`s 24 sorts of seal font in 2006 (Weoljung and Gongja being surnames each). For the goal of our research, some font inventors, font producers, other experts who participated in the inventing producers, and font designers have been interviewed, whereby several relevant factors could be well understood ; for example, the motivation of calligraphy inventing, its producing procedures, the satisfaction level among the parties concerned. As a consequence of these efforts, we came to a conclusion that the creation of font using calligraphy could be far more advanced in quality through mutual cooperation of those following factors : basically font inventors` high quality of work (2,350 Korean characters and 4,888 Chinese characters by KS5601), the ability of font companies to make a good plan for marketability and font designers` understanding of font-related work on the basis of calligraphical knowledge. In conclusion, we want to contribute to put forth the developing model of font through this research.
