尤庵 宋時烈의 直思想的 書藝美學

국문 초록

본고는 조선중기 성리학자이자 서예가였던 우암 송시열의 직사상적 서예미학을 연구한 논문이다. 우암은 학문적으로 趙光祖, 李珥, 金長生으로 이어지는 기호학파의 학통을 충실히 계승하였고, 이를 기반으로 直思想을 평생의 지표로 삼아 실천했다. 大義를 위해서는 목숨도 아끼지 않는 正大方嚴한 인품을 바탕으로 直思想을 敬思想으로 발전시켜 나아갔으며, 이러한 학문사상은 우암의 서예미학관과 서예미와도 밀접한 관련이 있다고 하겠다. 특히 우암은 朱子를 孔子이후 최고의 聖人으로 여길 정도로 그를 존숭하여 주자의 학문사상에 많은 영향을 받았다. 그러므로 주자의 학문과 사상은 우암 서예미학관의 기반이 되기도 했다. 우암 서예미학관의 특징은 文以載道的文道觀에 바탕을 둔 虛靜直內한 창작관, 書如其人的품격관, 格調品味의 비평관으로 집약할 수 있다. 우암은 서예의 궁극적 목표를 道를 구현하는 데 두었으므로 감정보다는 이성을 중시했으며, 또한 서예에 임하는 자세로는 虛靜直內한 마음상태를 요구했다. 즉, 마음을 비워 明鏡止水와 같이 맑은 상태에서 정신을 바르게 갖는 것을 강조했다. 그리하여 虛靜直內한 상태에서 가슴에 품은 뜻을 붓을 통해 표현해야만 心畫가 되는 것이며, 그 글씨는 곧 그 사람의 품성을 드러낸다는 書如其人的品格觀을 견지했다. 나아가 嚴正剛毅한 풍도와 직사상 및 중화사상, 만권의 독서를 통해 우러나는 書卷氣에 바탕한 우암의 서예미학관은 서예창작에 있어서 正奇大方한 直方美, 嚴正剛毅한 陽剛美, 道藝合一의 中和美로 발현되었다. 直方美는 우암의 直思想으로부터 곧은 정신과 대의가 글씨로 드러난 것이고, 陽剛美는 우암의 엄정강의한 풍도와 산악과 같은 기상으로부터 표출된 것이며, 中和美는 도예합일의 사상을 바탕으로 성리학적 덕의가 서예로 체현된 것이라 하겠다. 이상을 종합하면 우암은 직사상, 중화사상의 성리철학적 토대 위에서 유학자로서의 정대하고 엄정한 풍모와 중화의 인문정신을 서예창작으로 구현했으며, 우암서예의 미학적 특징은 直方美, 陽剛美, 中和美로 요약할 수 있겠다.

영문 초록

This study considers calligraphy of Woo-Am, Song Si-yeol who is a scholar of Sung Confucianism and chirographer at the middle of the Joseon Dynasty in a Aesthetic point of view. Woo-Am succeed to a scholastic mantle of the Kiho school which was linked with Jo Kwang-jo, Lee E, and Kim Jang-saeng, and developed it. Also Woo-Am respected Ju-ja and go after his study and ideas. Woo-Am praticed Jik(直, straight) idea for his whole life. His Jik idea was continued to Kyeong(敬, respect) idea, and the thought was a base of his character which is not to spare his own life for a noble cause. Also, this Jik idea became a root of Woo-Am's view of calligraphy. The aesthetic features of Woo-am's calligraphy which based on Juja's study is a combination of creation of Heojungjiknae(虛靜直內), grace of Seoyeogiin(書如其人), criticism of Gyeokjopummi(格調品味) based on a view of literature which literature is means to deliver morality. Therefore, Woo-am emphasizes rationality more than emotion. He asked clear and pure attitude when one performs calligraphy. Calligrapher express his mind with a brush with clear and pure attitude, so the calligraphy becomes mind-writing. Also, the writing shows who the calligraphy is. It is Woo-am's view of grace, Soyeogiin(書如其人). Woo-Am's calligraphy has charm of Jikbang(直方) which is 正奇 大方, beauty of Yanggang(陽剛) which is strictly fair and upright, and grace of equability which is union of morality and art. Woo-am's personality which was fair, his ideas of Jik(直, straight) and equability, and his extensive reading affect his calligraphy. Charm of Jikbang(直方) means Woo-am's sound mind and great cause from his Jik idea expressed by his calligraphy. Beauty of Yanggang(陽剛) caused from Woo-am's upright attitude and his nature like mountain peaks. Grace of equability come out from his virtue as a Confucianist based on idea of union of morality and art. In a word, Woo-am's calligraphy is straight, magnificent. His calligraphy displays Woo-am's character which is fair and upright.
