국문 초록

한국 천주교회는 세계교회의 역사와 비교해 볼 때 상대적으로 짧은 역사를 가지고 있다. 외부에서 도입된 천주교회는 조선교회에서 특이한 기원을 나타내고 있음을 알 수 있다. 조선사회에서 천주교의 진정한 보급이 이루어지기 위해서는 思考와 行動의 좀 더 폭넓은 노력이 필요했다. 교회는 사회에 내재한 문제들을 극복할 수 있게 도왔고 신자들은 문제에 대한 해결책을 제공하려 하였다. 그러나 어려움은 전통사회 내에서 종교에 부여한 역할에 있었다. 교회와 국가 사이의 권익의 분배에 익숙한 서구적 사고에서 보면 유교로 특정 지워지는 사회에 있어 국가의 절대권은 파악하기 힘든 것이었다. 국가의 행정기구에 속하지 않는 독립된 조직체의 존재는 그 자체로서 사회적으로 또 정치적으로 의심을 받을만한 것이었다. 교회의 독립을 유지하려는 노력은 쉽게 사회의 질서를 顚覆하려는 것으로 간주되었다. 한국 천주교회의 역사를 통해 우리는 하나의 문제를 제기해 볼 수 있다. 천주교가 몇몇 유학자들에 의해 조선에 도입되었을 때 무엇보다도 조선사회가 당면하고 있는 어려움을 극복하고자 했던 것이라면, 오늘날에도 역시 같은 문제를 제기해 볼 수 있는 것이다. 천주교 좀 더 정확히 한국 천주교회는 주어진 상황을 극복하면서 한국사회에서 하나의 논리로서 그 역할을 수행하였는가? 본 연구에서는 해방 이후 정치상황이라는 한정적인 기간 내에서 천주교회와 국가의 관계와 그 특이성을 살펴보고자 한다. 본 연구는 4장으로 구성되어 있다. 서론에 이어 2장에서는 해방정국의 정치/교회 상황을 정치상황과 천주교회의 행동으로 나누어 살펴보고, 3장에서는 이러한 상황 하에 놓여있던 천주교회의 정치적 카톨리시즘의 형성과 그 한계를 살펴봄으로써 천주교회와 국가 간의 관계를 구명하고 마지막 장을 결론으로 정리하고자 한다.

영문 초록

The history of the Korean Catholic church is relatively shorter than that of the world church. We can see that the Catholic church, which was introduced from abroad, has an unique origin in the Korean church. In order for the true dissemination of the Catholic faith required a wider effort in thought and action in the Korean society. The church helped provide answers to overcoming the issues of society and to solve the problems of the individuals. But the true obstacle was with the role that the traditional society had placed on religion. It would have been difficult for the western mind, accustomed to the division of church and state, to understand the absolute power of the state which is a characteristic of the confucius culture. Any organization independent and not under the administrative rule of the government, was naturally under suspicious both socially and politically. The efforts to maintain the independence of the church was easily misunderstood to undermine the order of the established state. From the history of the Korean Catholic church we can single out one significant issue. If those scholars of the Chosun era imported Catholicism to overcome the difficulties that the Chosun society faced, then this can be said to be true to the issues that we see today. Has Catholicism, or to be more exact, Korean Catholicism played its role in Korean society as a theory in Korean society and overcome the situations presented to it? This study attempts to look at the characteristics of the relationship between the Catholic church and the state from the limited period and political situation after the liberation of Korea from Japan. The study consists of four chapters. After the introduction, in chapter two We will look into both the political situation and the actions of the Catholic church in the political-church situation after Liberation. In chapter three We will look at the formulation of political Catholicism that evolved from this situation and its limitations thereby explaining the relationship between the Catholic church and the State and make my conclusion in the last Chapter.
