The main goal of this thesis is to demonstrate how the conventional moral education system, which both Korea and Japan practiced before 1945, under the Japanese Imperial regime, has reorganized after American occupancy. Furthermore, we will study the changes in politics and social status after the establishment of the new school moral education system, and will compare the different characteristics both nations held when establishing this new system, hence determining both the nations democratic school moral education characteristics. After World War Ⅱ, under American military regime, Korean and Japan set their immediate goals as democracy. In the matter of educational systems, both nations hoped to train the Imperial citizens, from before the war, away from conventional ethics education, such as loyalty and filial duty, by introducing the new democratic ideology. This meant setting their goals as improving the quality of moral education for democratic citizen by carrying out a new system of moral education. However, because of the nations differences in politics, history and society, the new democratic moral educational system showed considerable differences in educational goals and content. As a result, we can conclude that both nations had variations on how youths understood and accepted democracy taught to them. With these problems in mind, this thesis examined both nations process in reorganizing the moral education system form before and after the war, and examined the nations democratic moral education characteristics and the influence this had on the citizens in the make up of democracy in both nations. In Korea, democracy was taught to citizens with patriotism and ideology directly connection with each other through ethics and morals. Koreans focused their aims as the spread of democracy, democratic character, and democratic direction in general. As a result of this, Koreans focused on inner morals, as they set their basis on humanitarian moral standards. On the other hand, Japan taught their citizens of democracy that was demanded in society. They focused on a standard of behavior that was needed in social life. As a result they understood democracy as an integration of procedure and method so we can conclude that this allowed them to spread their style of democracy form their government, and to their everyday life.
