크리스티나 로제티의 『왕자의 순례』 는 시인이 당대의 지배 이데올로기 중 하나였을 낭만적 사랑에 대해 어떠한 관점을 가지고 있는가를 단적으로 보여준다 이 작품은 당대 가장 인기 있는 텍스트에 속했던 『잠자는 미인』 과 『순례자의 역정』 에 바탕을 두고 이 두 남성 텍스트들의 동화와 기독교적 알레고리의 요소를 십분 활용하면서도 이들을 페미니스트적 관점에서 독특하게 전유하고 있다 또한 이 작품은 기존 남성 텍스트들을 패러디하면서도 다양한 해석의 자유를 허용하는 우화의 형식 속에 담겨있고, 또한 세속적인 요소와 종교적인 요소가 긴밀하게 결합되어 있어 해석의 폭과 깊이를 더해준다 이작품은 동화 속의 왕자와 공주의 관계를 모티브로 취함으로써 공주를 찾아 나선 왕자의 순례를 통해 종교적 색채를 가미시키면서도 무엇보다 당대 남녀관계에 대한 페미니스트적 비판을 가하고 있다 그 비판은 여성 예술가의 상상력에서 나온 풍요로운 비유와 상징, 알레고리와 환타지 등의 요소를 통해 다충적이고 자유로운 의미의 공간을 만들어낸다 그리하여 궁극적으로는 남성문학의 전통을 전복시키면서 이를 뛰어넘는 여성 예술가의 예술적 역량을 한껏 돋보이게 한다 『왕자의 순례』 는 왕자의 순례와 더불어 공주의 순례를 다루고 있다 시의 표면적인 순례는 왕자의 순례이지만, 공주의 내면적인 순례는 왕자의 순례의 의미를 규정하는 핵심적인 용인이 된다 세속적 차원에서 본다면 왕자의 순례나 공주의 순례를 모두 순례의 실패로 볼 수 있을 것 이다 따라서 이 시에는 수동성이라는 실존의 장벽에 갇혀서 자신을 구원할 힘이 없이 남성의 구원에만 의지하는 빅토리아 시대 여성의 비극적 운명에 대한 연민과, 여성의 운명에 무관심하면서 자기 실존의 궁극적 의미에도 무지한 무방향성의 당대 남성에 대한 시인의 비판적인 시각이 드러나 있다고 할 수 있다 또한 종교적 차원에서 본다면 왕자는 구원의 순례를 떠나는 기독교인이라 할 수 있으며, 공주는 왕자를 구원하는 주체인 여성 그리스도를 상징하는 것으로 해석할 수 있다 이러한 성 역할의 전복적인 도치는 또 다른면에서 시인의 페미니스트적 상상력을 극대화시켜 보여준다

영문 초록

In The Prince's Progress, we can read Christina Rossetti's perspective the romantic one of the dominating ideologies in the Victorian England Based on the most popular texts, Sleeping Beauty and Pilgrim's Progress, this poem adopts the frames and motives of the fairy tale and the Christian allegory, and creates its own feminist version of the two male texts In the frame of allegory, this poem both parodies the existing male texts and combines the secular and religious elements, opening extending the multiple possibilities of its interpretation This poem, taking as its motive the relationship between the prince and princess in the fairy tale, that is, the prince's pilgrimage in seeking the sleeping princess, criticizes the male-female relationship of the Victorian age from the feminist view-point That criticism provides the poem with the multi-layered and flexible space of meanings, exploiting the literary devices of figures, symbols, allegory and fantasy The poem, thus, subverts the male literary tradition, showing up the female writer's artistic capability The Prince's Progress deals with the princess's progress as well as the prince's progress Even though the main progress at the surface level is enacted by prince, the princess's interior progress defines the ultimate meaning of the prince's progress At the secular dimension, both of the two progresses failed, which reveals the poet's critical eye to view the passive Victorian woman's tragic fate to wait vainly for the man who is disinterested in her well-being, and, so, cannot redeem her in the end At the religious symbolizes a female Christ, his Savior This gender subversion demonstrates fluently Christina Rossetti's feminist imagination
