국문 초록

안락사와 관련된 400년 된 가톨릭의 전통은 다음 두 가지 구분들 사이를 오가고 있다. 하나는 죽이는 것과 죽게 내버려 두는 것의 구분이고, 다른 하나는 생명을 보존하기 위한 일상적인 수단과 특별한 수단 간의 구분이다. 이 전통은 건전한 신학과 적절한 목자의 감수성을 구현한다. 하지만 그것은 단지 철학적인 논증에 뿐만 아니라 신앙적으로 고무된 인 간적인 시각에도 마찬가지로 의존한다. 그 전통 안에서는 또한 특정한 수단이 일상적인 것인지 아니면 특별한 것인지에 관한 판단들이 어느 정도는 주관적이라는 사실 또한 인정되고 있다. 특별한 경우들에서 최종적인 결정은 선하고 양심적인 사람들의 지혜에 의해 인도되고 교회의 가르침에 의해 깨우쳐진 개개인의 신중한 판단을 필요로 한다. 하지만 최근 들어서 일부 교회 당국자들 사이에서는 특별한 경우들에 대해 답변을 규정하고자 하는 경향, 이른바 도덕적인 미세조정을 시도하려는 경향이 발견된다. 그러나 그런 식의 규정은 관련된 개개인의 특별한 성황과 감정을 제대로 처리할 수가 없다. 교회는 사람들을 초대해 신앙적으로 고무된 인간적인 시각을 공유하도록 만들고 그들에게 전통적인 도덕 원리들을 지속적으로 해명해 줌으로써 좀 더 효과적으로 그들에게 가르침을 주게될 것이다. 영구적인 식물인간 상태에 빠진 사람에게 인공적인 영양과 산소의 공급을 중단해야 하는가 하는 어려운 문제는 위에 제시한 논증의한 사례로 받아들일 수 있다.

영문 초록

The four hundred year old Catholic tradition relevant to euthanasia revolves around two distinctions: between killing and letting die, on the one hand, and between ordinary and extraordinary means for conserving life, on the other. This tradition embodies sound theology and proper pastoral sensitivity. It is dependent, however, not simply on philosophical argument, but on a faith-inspired vision of the human person. Also acknowledged in the tradition is the fact that judgments as to whether a given means is ordinary or extraordinary are to some extent subjective. Final decisions in particular cases necessarily involve the prudent judgment of the individual person, guided by the wisdom of good and conscientious people, and enlightened by church teaching. There has, however, been a tendency among some church authorities in recent times to prescribe answers to particular cases, a tendency to moral micro-management. Such prescriptions cannot, however, do justice to the particular circumstances and feelings of the individual persons involved. The church would teach more effectively by inviting people to share a faith-inspired vision of the human person and by continuing to elucidate traditional moral principles. The difficult question of whether to withdraw artificial nutrition and hydration from a person in a persistent vegetative state is taken as an illustration of the foregoing argument.
