참고서라는 우상

국문 초록

한국의 초∙중등교육 논의에서 참고서는 본격적인 연구와 비판의 대상이 되지 않아왔다. 하지만 그에 대한 연구는 교육 제도나 대학입시 방법 같은 것보다 훨씬 중요하며, 먼저 이루어져야 한다. 지배적인 위치에 있는 게 사실이고, 무엇보다 교육 내용을 좌우하기 때문이다. 참고서가 단지 ‘참고하는 도서’에 머물지 않고 교육 전반을 지배하는 이데올로기의 상징이 되게 한 것은 한국사회의 천민자본주의, 기능주의적 교육관 등이다. 교육 담당자들 또한 그에 젖어서 점수 따기를 돕는 데 안주하였다. 한국 교육의 고질적인 병폐를 진단하고 개선하기 위해서는 ‘참고서 연구’ 혹은 ‘참고서라는 우상 타파 운동’이 필요하다. 이 글은 그것을 주장하면서. 그게 무엇을, 어떻게, 무슨 목적으로 하는 것인지에 대해 국어 교육 중심으로 논의하였다. 필자의 기본 생각은 ‘맹목적인 암기’의 행진을 멈추고 인간다운 삶을 위한 교육 쪽으로 방향을 틀기 위해서는 참고서 연구가 매우 효과적일 수 있으니, 참고서의 실체를 인정하고, 실제적인 연구를 하자는 것이다. 또 더 이상 사회 현실이나 교육 제도를 탓하지 말고 교육 내용부터 개선하자는 것이다.

영문 초록

In the discuss of elementary and secondary education in Korea, Chamgoseo(참고서), Korea study-aid reference material, has not been studied or criticized on a full scale. However, it is more worth to be studied than the educational system or college entrance procedure and should be done prioi to them since it is a predominant factor in education system of Korea and most of all governs the contents of education itself. Chamgoseo is not just a reference book but a symbol of ideology dominating the elementary and secondary education in Korea. The overflowing pariah capitalism in the society and the functionalistic views on education made this happen. Educators also gave themselves up to these and were simply devoted to help educatees get high scores on exam. A thorough 'study of Chamgoseo' or the 'destruction of idolized Chamgoseo' is necessary to examine and fix this chronic problems of education in Korea. That is what I want to argue in this writing as well as what and how should it be done with being focused in the context of Korean education. My basic statement is that the study of Chamgoseo should lead us to the education which enriches life instead of the current one just iterating purposeless memorizing. Thus we should face up to the essence and meanings of Chamgoseo and do practical studies on it improving the contents of education, rather than putting blame on the reality of society or education system.
