탐구공동체 수업에서 교사와 학생이 경험하는 어려움 및 변화․발전에 대한 사례 연구

국문 초록

이 글은 초등학교 5학년의 탐구공동체 수업 사례를 통하여, 탐구공동체 수업에서 교사와 학생이 경험하는 어려움, 변화 및 발전 과정에 대하여 연구하였다. 탐구공동체 수업에 대한 교사의 높은 기대 및 철저한 준비에도 불구하고 초기 수업은 난해한 교재내용, 교사의 추상적 질문, 근거를 요구하는 발표 등으로 인해 주제선정, 토론규칙 위반, 발표 편중 등의 문제를 노출시켰다. 수업 초기의 이러한 어려움은 후반부 수업에는 상당 부분 개선되었다. 학생들의 주제선정과 근거를 수반한 발표 능력이 향상되었고, 발표 편중 현상도 완화되었으며, 추상적이었던 교사의 질문도 보다 구체화되었다. 그러나 발표 내용보다 개인적 친분에 따른 학생들의 차별적 공감 문제가 여전하였고, 시간이 흐를수록 학생들 사이의 발표 내용의 질적 차이가 보다 심화되는 문제도 발생했다. 1년간의 탐구공동체 수업으로 인한 가장 큰 변화는 난해한 교재 내용을 함께 읽고, 주제를 선정하고, 토론하며, 공동으로 정한 규칙을 준수하는 등 교실이 사고하는 공동체로 변화되고 있다는 것이었다. 탐구공동체 수업의 성공적 정착을 위해서는 학생들을 탐구 및 토론의 장으로 인도할 교사의 능력 신장을 위한 교사 교육과 학생들의 독해력 향상을 위한 노력들이 동반되어야 할 것이다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to investigate the classes using the community of inquiry in an elementary school. This case study examined an elementary teacher's attitude to the classes during her preparation for community of inquiry. This study also described the teacher's and students' difficulties as well as the developmental process appeared in their strenuous efforts in the classes. For the qualitative data collection, the 5th grade classroom participated in the philosophy program was observed for 34 weeks, and the teacher and students were interviewed to check effects of it. Analysis of the data showed that the teacher emphasized it would help students to develop skills to converse with others and higher-order thinking ability, to concern about others, to improve sense of community and an ability to judge uprightly. But in the beginning of the classes, both teacher and students showed difficulties in managing and developing the abstract talks. As the classes were moved on, however, both teacher and students were able to make significant progress on their philosophical discussion and discourses through their strenuous efforts to use on-going abstract talks. Finally, the students showed not only the ability to deeply think about and discuss the philosophical topics, but also the overall improvement of communicating, sharing, and discussing of their abstract ideas based on philosophical evidence and reasoning. According to the result of this study, it was found that more opportunities were given to students to learn the program continuously and systematically. Though there were many difficulties in proceeding this study for students who had never participated in the class based on philosophical background, the classes of this type should be encouraged and spread to more students.
