국문 초록

이 연구는 자녀교육을 위해 자녀와 아내를 해외에 보내놓고 홀로 한국에서 살고 있는 기러기 아빠의 삶을 이해하기 위한 것이다. 연구의 목적을 달성하기 위하여 중산층 기러기 아빠 9명을 대상으로 면담의 기법을 활용한 질적 연구를 수행하였다. 반구조화된 질문지를 기초로 면대면의 직접면담과 온라인상의 비대면 면담을 실시하였다. 또한 기러기 아빠에 대한 부분적인 관찰도 병행하였다. 연구에 따르면 기러기 아빠의 삶은 분거기간이 길어질수록 ‘이별과 기대→자유와 애틋함→고립과 공허감→갈등’의 과정을 거치게 된다. 기러기 아빠의 출발은 꿈과 희망으로 가득차 있지만, 기러기생활이 길어지면 길어질수록 기러기 아빠들의 고민은 깊어간다. 특히 그들을 지탱해 왔던 자녀의 미래에 대한 환상들이 시간이 흐를수록 구체화되지 못하고 막연하게 존재할 때, 가족관계가 의례화되어 갈 때, 그들은 한국인과 외국인의 중간지대에 서 있는 자녀들의 상황이 그들의 미래의 불확실성과 연결될지도 모른다는 불안감을 떨치지 못하게 된다. 그리고 이러한 고민은 자신들의 선택, 그리고 가족의 해체까지를 동반한 희생의 가치에 대한 의구심으로 이어진다.

영문 초록

In Korea, the wild geese fathers mean dads who live apart from their family for a long time in order to educate their children in english speaking countries. This study is to investigate the wild geese fathers' conflicts on education for children in Korea. In order to collect data on the wild geese fathers' life, this study interviewed 9 middle class wild geese fathers, and performed partial observation on their life. According to the conclusion, the wild goose father experienced the four developmental stage. In the first stage, the wild goose father experienced the separation from his family, but harbored great expectations for his child's educational success. In second stage, the wild goose father felt that he became set free from physical control under his wife and child, but he formed the strong affection toward his family. In the third stage, the wild goose father became estranged from those around him and fell into despondency. In the fourth stage, the wild goose father was anxious about his child's future and was worried if he should make his child and wife come back to Korea. In the first time, the wild geese fathers were full of hope of their children's educational success. But the wild geese fathers' hopes were changed intodisappointment and conflicts with the lapse of time
