국문 초록

이 논문은 기초주의 교육학의 3이념(시간, 자유, 질서) 중 하나인 자유에 대해 현대 교육의 맥락에서 다루고 있다. 기초주의에서의 자유는 개인적 차원에서는 인간의 근본 존재가치 및 존엄성과 관련이 되고 사회적 차원에서는 자유민주주의라는 기본적 사회가치와 연관이 된다. 이 글은 이러한 개인적, 사회적 차원에서의 자유의 문제를 근대교육형성 이래 중시되어온 자유의 차원들을 고찰함으로써 조망하고, 현대교육에서 개인적, 사회적 자유의 문제가 어떻게 이해되어야 하는가에 대해 논의한다.

영문 초록

This paper examines the concept of freedom as it is employed in Educational Foundationism (or Gichojui, coined by Han Ki-eon) with regard to the recent controversies in public education. There are at least three basic ideas of freedom in education worthy to discuss in light of the current debates: freedom as a consequence of enlightenment; freedom as a vehicle for human emancipation; freedom as optionality. Freedom as optionality is what is directly applied in the current problem-prone policy of school choice. This paper argues that the libertarian assumptions that underscore the neoliberal policies of education are limited in its application to the societies concerned with the effect of public education. The libertarian ideas are typically based on the notions that individuate the idea of freedom, which inherently contradict with notions that are more concerned with enhancing the common human ability. This paper suggests that the theoretical structure of Educational Foundationism should be complemented by a redefinition or a reconceptualization of the sub-concepts of freedom to serve as a viable analytical framework.
