영문 초록

  This paper aims to explore how Gertrude Stein as a woman modernist tries to subvert and transform the traditional patriarchal poetry writing through her revolutionary poetics. Stein is considered by many critics the chief modern literary eccentric owing to her unique style. Stein"s writing style is totally differentiated from male modernists" poetic style. Most of all, repetition has a particularly important function in Stein"s works, where it, like alliteration and rhyme, draws attention to the subversive and transformative potential of linguistic play. Focused on Lifting Belly and Patriarchal Poetry, this paper examines how Stein breaks the boundaries between outer and inner, and among objects, images, words, and mind, which symbolizes fluid, unfixed, finally permeable writing of poetry. In Lifting Belly, the title phrase, "lifting belly," repeated consistently throughout, represents both that which escapes traditional verbal definition and yet calls forth, in its various contexts, a joyous web of homosexual eroticism, creation, domesticity, celebration, and social and intellectual defiance. Stein presents a fluid, consummate experience labeled "lifting belly" that merges love, intimacy, domestic niceties and rituals, but attempts to expand all of these things. Furthermore, Patriarchal Poetry vividly describes that the landscape of Stein"s writing is democratic, fluid and fragmented writing, while patriarchal poetry represents hierarchical, fixed and rigid style of writing. Stein"s deconstructive and demythologizing rewriting of patriarchal poetry offers to the reader a new act of literary origination. Unordered by traditional sentences or syntax, Stein"s words find a new poetics through repetition, variation, and rhyme. Finally Stein"s poetry radically destabilizes binary opposition and hierarchical system of patriarchal writing.
