In Japanese colonialism period, the USA was depicted and praised as an incarnation of "Success in Modernization", and "Science and Civilization" at Shinsosul "Huel-Euy-Nu" by Lee In Geek and "Moo-Jeong" by Lee Kwang Soo. The image of the USA has changed to as a close friend and as a beneficiary to Koreans when Korea had been released from Japanese colonialism and USA army had been cooperate with Korean armed forces during Korean War. The USA as a very strong nation is appeared "Captain Lee" by Geon Gwhang Yong.
The civil resistance of 4.19 in 1960, the image of the USA had radically changed. Desire towards more democratic society, bitter experience from Viet Nam War, tragic story of comfort women for US soldiers revealed alternative issues of the USA and these negative images started to be appeared in Korean literature. "Bun-Ji" by Nam Jung Hyun exposed the negative images of the USA. In these literary pieces, the USA are depicted as a thief, a war criminal, most of all, an imperialist.
In Korean modern novels, with full-scale Viet-Nam War was focused "The Shadow of Arms" written by Whang Seuk Young in 1980"s. Whang Seuk Young had criticized not only that the USA made war to busyness but also the USA had hold hegemony. An other author, Ahn Geong Hyo had published "The White War". In that novel, The USA had made the war so that the injured existences of human being had come into being. In 19910"s "The Red Aozai" written by Oh Heun Mi and "Slow Bulit" written by Lee Dae Whan shows us Viet-Nam War is not ended.
Korean novels of comfort woman was written by man and woman writers had revealed the images of the USA had been a negative thing. Anti-Americanism occurred strongly in Korean literature. They critics America as a culture Imperialism. But in Choi In Hun"s and Ahn Jeong Hoe"s novels, we can find partly positive and negative images about America. Those are ambiguous.
Now a days, The images of America construct part of Korean"s identity. The simplify of the other"s character is the problem of Korean. Issues here are the black-and-white images reflected in Korean literature. Either in negative or in positive, oversimplification of the evaluation on the USA may not be valid. In-depth analysis and multiple perspectives are required to understand the complex issues of Korean-USA relationship. The reasons for the oversimplified approach to both countries are due to the year-long history of division of Korean peninsula, and the ideologic pressures of the oppressive regimes, and Jingoism.
