  본 논문은 두 가지 상이한 R&D 접근방법 또는 R&D 분야를 선택하는 두 기업의 R&D 경쟁에 대해 살펴본다. R&D 경쟁 시 기업들은 먼저 어떠한 R&D 방법을 택할 지를 결정하고 이후 해당 R&D 분야에서 최적 수준인 연구개발투자 규모를 결정하는 순으로 2단계 경쟁을 한다. 만약 기업들이 같은 R&D 방법을 선택할 경우 호환 외부성이 발생한다. 그러나 이 경우 두 기업이 동시에 R&D에 성공하고 이러한 동시 성공이 기업 수익에 부정적 영향을 줄 가능성이 있다. R&D 접근방법에 대한 기업들의 선택은 호환외부성의 크기에 따라 과도한 집중화와 과도한 차별화가 발생할 수 있다. R&D 성공 이후 제품시장에서 수익이 균등 분배되는 equal-sharing R&D 게임의 경우 단일한 R&D 접근방법을 선택하는 기업들은 과도하게 높은 수준의 투자를 할 수 있다. 반면, 상이한 R&D 접근방법을 선택하는 기업들은 사회적으로 최적수준의 투자를 하게 된다. R&D 성공 이후 제품 시장에서의 수익이 경쟁에 의해 모두 소진되는 Bertrand R&D 게임의 경우 R&D 투자는 효율적으로 이루어지나 R&D 접근방법의 선택에 있어서는 과도한 차별화 현상이 발생 할 수 있다. 이는 미국 무선통신시장에서 기업들의 R&D 투자에 대한 왜곡 없이, 과도한 R&D 차별화에 따른 후생감소현상을 완화하기 위해서는 정액 투자보조금 정책이 필요함을 시사한다.

영문 초록

  I consider a R&D contest between two firms which can choose to concentrate their research on one of two research avenues or approaches. In the R&D contest, firms compete in two stages. In the first stage, firms choose which approach they will investigate, after which in the second stage they endogenously select optimal effort level given firms" choice of approach. There are compatibility externalities if they choose the same approach. However, there is also the possibility of simultaneous discovery which may cause harmful results to both firms. The equilibrium avenue choice in each game depends on the magnitude of compatibility externality where it may exhibit too much differentiation or too much duplication. The equilibrium effort choice conditional on duplication in avenue choice is inefficiently high in the equal sharing R&D game, while the equilibrium effort choice is efficient when firms choose different research avenues. The result of the excess differentiation and the efficient investment choice in the Bertrand R&D game suggest that the lump-sum investment subsidy may need to be implemented in the US wireless telecommunication industry to reduce inefficiency involved in excess differentiation without distorting efficient investment choice.
