영문 초록

  The present study elucidates the general background of the development of the system-building era of early English grammars, from the mid-18th century to the late 19th century. The second section, following the introduction, deals with the rational socio-cultural milieu. Next examined are the calls for the establishment and subsequent failure of an English Academy, which would favor the standardization of the then crude English. The next section considers Johnson"s Dictionary, the eloquence movement and grammars, which had evolved as substitutes for the failed Academy proposals. Finally, some late 18th century representative grammars and the origins of the prescriptive attitude are dealt with in detail.
