인도인 디아스포라와 초국가주의

국문 초록

  본 연구의 목적은 인도인 디아스포라의 초국가적 성격을 규명하는데 있다. 해외 인도인의 초국가적 성격은 모국 인도를 포함한 세계 도처에 흩어져 있는 인도인 디아스포라들 사이에 사회ㆍ문화적, 경제적, 정치적 맥락에서 네트워크가 생성ㆍ유지되는 제반 양상들을 통해 드러날 수 있다. 특히 미시적 시각에서의 현상 분석을 강조해 온 인류학은 소위 ‘아래로부터의 초국가주의’에 큰 관심을 두고 있다. 본 연구는 개인, 가족, 공동제의 일상 적이고 비공식적 맥락에서 일어나는 혼인과 친족 관계, 현금 송금, 사회ㆍ문화적 이벤트, 전화와 인터넷을 통한 상시적 연결, ‘제트형 우주인’ 생활, 종파주의적 정치행위 참여 등을 분석함으로써 인도인 디아스포라의 초국가적 성격을 규명하고자 한다. 지나친 기술결정론을 경계해야 하는 것은 마땅하나 오늘날 인도인 디아스포라를 비롯한 국제 이주자들의 초국가적 흐름의 가속화와 네트워크의 말도의 강화에 획기적인 교통과 통신수단의 발달이 큰 역할을 하였음은 부인하기 어려운 사실이다. ‘아래로부터 초국가주의’ 과정의 진행과 함께 인도 정부의 디아스포라 국내 유치 및 네트워킹 노력이라는 ‘위로부터 초국가주의’는 향후 해외 인도인들의 초국가적 성격을 더욱 강화시킬 것으로 사료된다.

영문 초록

  The main objective of this study is to examine the every day transnational practices of Indian diasporas relating particularly to kinship and marriage relationships, domestic rituals, exchange of monetary and non-monetary resources. This study is largely concerned with the "transnationalism from below" to examine the daily lives, activities and social relationships of overseas Indians living in two or more nation-states. The principal agents of "transnationalism from below" become everyday people who maintain family and kinship ties, send remittances, and have multiple localities in their daily transnational practices. The emergence of Indian transnational migrants has been largely attributable to revolutionary developments of faster, cheaper, and more efficient global communication technology. This study also emphasizes that the positive linkages between Indian diasporas and motherlands is made possible through the socio-economic and political incentives given by the Indian Government. The attractive schemes like the PIO card are introduced for Non-Resident Indians and People of Indian Origins.
