Due to the advance of the Internet, the electronic commerce is getting more widely used, and customers" demand for the e-Commerce service quality is rapidly increasing. e-Commerce companies, on the other hand, require the Internet services whose quality is more predictable to provide more reliable service to their customers. Thus, it is very important to provide both e-Commerce companies and customers with the measurement and the prediction of service quality in real-life network environment, that is, the appropriateness of e-Commerce server systems capacity and network bandwidth and the analysis of the allowable number of on-line users. But the research on service quality measurement and prediction analysis in real network environment is hard to find in the literature. For this end we constructed sample e-Commerce systems and tried to measure the service quality of the systems in real network environment. And we also conducted experiments to predict and analyse the service quality in accordance with the variations in e-Commerce server resource, network bandwidth, and the number of on-line customers. Specifically, we analyzed the delay zones in processing e-Commerce transactions, proposed service prediction model by defining parameters for QoS measurement, estimated the allowable limit of the number of on-line customers in a given environment, and suggested feasible network and server system environment to meet a given QoS requirement through simulation experiments.
The experimental results on sample systems show that the service quality measured in local network, as in previous work, does not coincide with that in real network. It is supposed because of the mismatch in transaction response times under dynamically changing real network environment regardless of the hyped bandwidth of high speed Internet connection services. In an experiment to re-configure the server systems and the Internet bandwidth for a given current and future QoS requirements, we analysed how much capacity is needed and how many on-line customers are allowable to satisfy the threshold for each kinds of the Internet connections such as Wireless LAN, cable, ADSL and VDSL access.
We hope that the approach presented in this thesis be the groundwork for the research on the service quality of various types of e-Commerce and on-line services.
