국문 초록

  이 연구는 한국, 일본, 미국, 영국의 초등학교 사회과 교과서를 분석하고 그 결과가 우리나라 사회 교과서의 내용 구성 개선에 필요한 시사점을 추출하는 데 그 목적이 있었다. 연구 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 해당 단원의 핵심 질문, 핵심내용, 핵심 개념 등을 제시하는 방안을 검토할 필요가 있다. 둘째, 이야기를 하는 방식으로 내용을 제시하는 방안을 검토할 필요가 있다. 셋째, 내용의 맥락에 따라 타교과와 통합된 내용을 제시할 필요가 있다. 넷째, 일상생활 문제 및 정서적 경험과 관련된 질문을 활용할 필요가 있다. 다섯째, 학습 내용의 이해를 안내하고 보조할 수 있는 화보를 활용할 필요가 있다.

영문 초록

  This study is to analyze and compare the elementary textbook contents of social studies in Korea, Japan, USA, and England and to make suggestions for the improvement of educational contents in Korean social studies textbooks. For the study, lessons on local geography in the fourth grade social studies textbooks of four different countries were selected and analyzed according to the three criteria: structure of the lesson, frequencies and styles of questions, and frequencies and functions of illustrations.
  From this comparative study, five suggestions are inferred for the improvement of the Korean elementary social studies textbooks. First, it is recommended that Korean textbooks should present core questions, content and key words in the introductive part of each lesson. Second, Korean textbooks should employ storytelling as a way of presenting educational contents. Third, Korean textbooks are recommended to include integrated contents fitting for students" life context. Fourth, Korean textbooks are recommended to include expressive questions through which students can express their own experience and feelings. Fifth, illustrations which can facilitate students to understand educational contents in the textbooks should be more employed.
