Korean Buddhism in not the Buddhism retired to hermitage in mountain any longer. It is a religion engaging in a matter of individual concern as well as social one in the midst of metropolis.
Korean Buddhism is a great success in popularization in company with success of a great city mission center. The popularization phenomena of Korean Buddhism is the important transformation of a modern Korean Buddhism.
From settings by great city mission centers, many city mission centers are in the course of erection by many monks in the metropolis. And also traditional temples in metropolis are even in the course of transformation to similar format with city mission center.
But in the popularization success of Korean Buddhism, that is to say appearance of a great city mission centers, the new problems are to be appeared, the deepening of faith just for blessing, material hypertrophy of temples, secularization of monks, a lack of proper Buddhist idea followed by sticking to the Christian propaganda mechanism.
Watching only the apparent development, Korean city mission center have made surprising success. But religious success can’t be on apparent development, that is guarantee of number of believers, material hypertrophy and so on. Secularization of religious monks is the step accompanied by material hypertrophy like shadow.
And unconditional following just sticking to the Christian propaganda mechanism, eventually it will make a result to lose the identity of Buddhism. The construction of Buddhist idea for mission is the most important task for keeping up the socialization of Korean Buddhism. If they succeed to construct the idea and embody the idea in korean society, the popularization phenomena of modern Korean Buddhism should not stop as the phenomena of a day.
