What is interreligious conflict and what causes it? Finding practical ways to resolve the interreligious conflict begins by answering to these questions.
Interreligious conflict inevitably follows when religions do not embody the way that they should be. Today religions have lost their purity, flexibility and creativity. However, there still is a hope in the original spirit of each religion and in the faith of many believers.
Interreligious conflict is a multi-layered problem Intra-believers conflict and intra-religious struggle. Believers struggle between their identity as believers and as socio-political beings at the same time they have conflicts with neighbors in different religious traditions. Intra-religious struggle takes place when the centripetal force and centrifugal force of each religion lose their balance.
The cause of interreligious conflict can be found in the absence of three elements: understanding the neighbor religions, communication and recognizing religious diversity. In other words, ignorance, absence of encounter, dialogue and tolerance brings interreligious conflict. Un derstanding religious diversity as a mere phenomenon in modem society limits the possibility for reconciliation. Every existence is subs tan tially pluralistic in their substantial structure and in the way they form and develop.
Three ways to overcome the interreligious conflict are suggested in this paper: Recovering of the identity as believers as a whole, forming interreligious friendship and building solidarity and cooperation for practical actions. Identity as believers is to be distinguished from their religious identification. To build friendship with people of different religions, learning each others religions is necessary. Forming solidarity for common issues not only helps in building friendship but also helps trust each other.
Resolving Interreligious conflict depends on each believer. There are several concrete plans to accomplish the suggestions listed above: Religions should not be used politically. Abusing neighboring religions should be stopped. Each religion needs to include other religions in their educational programs. Different religions have to work together for various gatherings.
Interreligious dialogue in Korea raises an important issue because Korea is historically an interreligious society that is going through a dynamic challenge today. Especially when people in faiths today are called upon to work for integrity, peace and life overcoming division, trouble and war, interreligious dialogue in Korea is not only a religious matter but also a peace movement for the reunification.
