국문 초록

  아동의 사회화에 영향을 미치는 변인을 규명하려는 시도는 아동발달 연구에서 오랜 역사를 지니고 있다. 부모와 자녀 관계에 대한 기존의 연구들은 자녀의 성격과 행동형성에 부모가 중요한 변수로 작용한다고 주장하고 있고 이러한 목소리는 오랜 기간 의심의 여지없이 받아들여져 왔다. 최근에 여기에 대항하여, Judith Rich Harris는 아동의 사회화에 부모의 영향보다는 교우 집단의 영향이 지배적이라고 주장하여 아동발달 분야에 새로운 논쟁을 야기 시켰다. Harris는 자신의 이론을 집단 사회화 이론이라고 이름 짓고, 아동의 사회화가 개인적인 차원에서 이루어지는 것이 아니라. 어머니들의 교우 집단에서 자녀들의 교우 집단으로 이루어진다고 제안하였다. 그녀는 또한 자녀들이 이중 구조(dual mechanism)를 가지고 집 안과 밖에서 서로 다르게 행동하게 되는데, 이것은 부모의 영향력이 친구와 있을 때는 그 효력을 상실하기 때문이라고 보고, 이를 부모의 영향이 지속적이지 않다는 근거로 삼고 있다. 본 논고에서는 Harris의 견해에 대한 소개와 더불어, 이에 반대되는 연구결과들을 근거로 집단 사회화 이론을 비판하고, 이를 바탕으로 아동 발달 연구가 앞으로 나아가야 할 방향에 대하여 제언하였다.

영문 초록

  Parental influence on children"s socialization has been regarded as having long-term and consistent effect. Recently Judith Rich Harris(1995, 1998) proposed an opposing viewpoint of parenting saying that parental influence is not effective as we think of. She argued that peer group is the true environmental factor that can explain why children turn out the way they do. According to her, peer group socialize the children differently and these different peer group socialization comes from mothers" peer group. That is why she named her theory as Group Socialization Theory. She also mentioned that children adjust themselves using code switching in and out of home because the parenting is not effective outside of the family. On the contrary parenting researchers still emphasize the importance of parenting in children"s socialization with the findings from temperament, risk and resilience, and ecological perspective. In this study, the author examined the unique contribution of GS theory in the study of child development and proposed the implications of this theory for future direction.
