  교육 및 심리검사 결과에서 차별적 기능 문항을 찾기 위한 많은 통계학적 기법들에도 불구하고, 기존의 방법들은 가장 중요한 질문이라고 할 수 있는 차별적 기능 문항의 원인에 대해서는 시사하는 바가 거의 없었다. 다시 말해서, 성별이나 인종과 같은 관찰변인에 따라 차별적 기능 문항을 찾아내었다고 하더라도 이들이 왜 차별적으로 기능하는 지에 대한 답은 거의 주어지지 않았다. 본 논문에서는 이산적 혼합분포 문항반응 모형에 기반을 두어 이러한 질문에 답하기 위한 새로운 방법론을 제안하고자 한다. 연구 1에서는 우도비 검증을 사용하여 백인과 흑인 그리고 백인과 히스패닉 학생들 각각에서 차별적으로 기능하는 문항들을 찾아낸 뒤에, 이들을 이용하여 실제적으로 차별적 기능 문항들로 인해 이득을 보거나 혹은 불이익을 보는 피험자들 즉 잠재집단을 확인하였다. 연구 2에서는 탐색적 혼합분포 모형 분석을 통해서 차별적 기능 문항의 원인이 되는 변수들에 대하여 조사하였다. 다른 인종에 속하는 학생들의 수학에 대한 태도에 관련된 변수를 비교 분석하여 관찰집단과 잠재집단들 간의 명확한 차이를 확인할 수 있었다.

영문 초록

  A number of methods exist for detection of differential item functioning (DIF), but these methods tell us little about the causes of DIF. DIF is typically defined based on a relationship with some manifest group characteristic, such as gender or ethnicity, which is usually only weakly associated with DIF. What is lacking is a method that will lead to understanding why some examinees respond differentially to an item and others do not. We present a new methodology for this purpose which is based on the use of discrete mixture item response theory (IRT) models. In Study 1, we compared responses from Caucasian and African-American examinees and Caucasian and Hispanic examinees using a likelihood ratio DIF test. We then used the patterns of DIF in these two samples to define two separate mixture IRT models in an attempt to determine whether the manifest characteristic of ethnic group membership was useful in identifying those examinees who were actually advantaged or disadvantaged by the item(s) in either sample. In Study 2, we performed an exploratory mixture model analysis on a sample containing members of all three ethnic groups to find and pursue the dimension(s) according to which DIF occurs. Comparisons of background and attitude variables of these examinees revealed some clear differences between manifest and latent groups.
